Hi Moms,
My 4 1/2 mons. old baby boy has some cradle caps on his head. Recommendations on any products out there that will work effectively? He doesn't have it all over his head, just mainly in the center. Thank you all in advance.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for responding to my question regarding the cradle caps. I've end up using the baby oil (gel type). The result is looking alot better and faster than I've anticipated. I left the gel on for about 10mins and used a fine baby comb to brush it out and then wash his hair. I've been doing it about three to four times a week now. His head is less flaky but it is still not completely gone. I will keep it up...

Hi C. -

My son had very stubborn cradle caps and nothing seemed to work (including extra virgin olive oil home remedy and over the counter creams). i finally got to try 'California Baby's Calendula Cream' and the cradle caps gone and never came back.

That stuff works great and you can get it at local target or amazon.com.

Good luck!

A & D Ointment- works great for everything. Available at any drug store. I also preferred it for diaper rash, compared to messy Balmex...

Olive oil worked okay for me. Several applications got rid of most of it but we still had a small patch that wouldn't go away for over 2 years. Then I started using Nature's Paradise Conditioning Coconut Shampoo & bodywash. After the first hair wash with this product his cradle cap was gone. After several month using it his skin looks great and still no sign of cradle cap.

C., at 4.5 months it probably isn't cradle cap - cc is only seen in newborns. Is the area itchy? It is most likely Seborrheic Dermatitis but ask your doctor to check it out. Normally they tell you to use head & shoulders or selsun blue 2-3 times a week and if the area is itchy use a 1% hydrocortisone cream.

Hi C.,
My younger daughter had the scaliest head in the world when she was a baby, and I tried many different remedies.

Fortunately, what worked best was the cheapest and easiest! Just use a little baby oil (or that baby oil gel) on the scaly parts and then gently massage it in. Then use a fine-tooth comb and gently comb the scaly parts out of his hair. I used to do this with my daughter (who had a TON of hair!) while I was breastfeeding her. She didn't even notice. =)

Pour a tsp of Burts Beeswax Apricot baby oil on a damply warm head, have a fun movie, story, or music set up to distrct him or her. With a fine tooth comb gently rub in a circular motion for the first few minuets you will notice the sides of the cradles cap peeling up from the oil, then it will start coming off in clumps with the comb, and hair. It will turn red in the area for the scalp is sensitive, but then a good bath will calm, and take the oil out. Remember not to rub too hard where the soft spot is. Do this before every bath time, and soon it will disapear. Our first had this problem, then a fine lady told me this secret and it works so well, and easy. I am now a doula, training to be a midwife new in the area, I love this site for helping new mommies.

Hello C.! My son was several monthes old (2-3) and he looked like he had cradle cap. I used something I picked up at WalMart called Cradle Cap Care by Gentle Naturals Disney baby. It helps remove crusty scales or flakes w/ Calendula & Vitamins.(It's in a light green bottle) It worked for my son. I tried brushing his hair like crazy all the time and it just kept flaking and kinda scabbing until I used this. You use it before a bath use it and remove flakes and whatnot with a baby brush after applying it. It took a couple bathes and it was gone. It was only a couple dollars. Good luck!

Put baby oil on his head. Let it sit for a minute, then use a fine tooth comb and comb it off. It's kind of gross, but it doesn't hurt when it is softened and comes right off. Both my boys had it quite a bit.

I have to agree with all the moms that suggested olive oil. I tried everything else, and olive oil was the only one that worked well and lasted. I used olive oil once and haven't had to use it again since (my son is now 5 years old). Use a fine tooth comb to lift off the flakes once the olive oil has been in your baby's hair for 5-10 minutes. The flakes should come right off the scalp.

Selsum blue shampoo...put it on the cradle cap area like a lotion before bath time. Leave it on for about 10 min, then rub off with warm wash cloth. Do this every night for about 4-5 days and it should be gone. There is a medicine in the shampoo that takes care of the cradle cap. Make sure you put it on like a lotion, not shampoo because it can sting the eyes if it gets runny.

Olive oil! The stuff you have in the kitchen. It's the best, it's all-natural (baby oil is mineral oil, aka, petroleum-based), it's cheap, and it gets the job done.

With my first son, my pediatrician suggested putting olive oil on his head, let it sit a few minutes, then brush with a soft bristled brush and wash. I just couldn't bring myself to do it, it just seemed too yucky. So I tried every product out there and nothing worked (and he still had it at almost 2 yrs).
Then my 2mo baby girl started getting it, and I really didnt want this to go on til she's 2, so I decided to try the olive oil.... and MAGIC, all the scales flaked right off when I brushed and it hasn't come back (it was pretty yucky, but it worked!!)- the brush should be soft enough not to scratch baby, but needs to be stiff enough to scrape the scales off - the baby brush I had was too soft and didn't do anything, so I used one of my own brushes.

Gently scrape it with your nail. Brush out. Wash, brush excess skin while soaped up. Dry. Use A&D Ointment (NOT cream) on head to help heal any sensitive skin.

Mom of four.

The olive oil route sounds like it would work for softening the area a bit before scraping or brushing off. But I would use baby oil instead. Personally, I didn't use oil at all.

Hi There,

Cover with olive oil for five to ten mins. Then take a soft baby brush and brush the scalp. This worked for my boys!
Hope it helps.

Use Olive oil . rub it on his head, and after 30 minutes you can gently scrap it off with your thumb nail. This is what our Doctor told us to do, and it got rid of all of it!
