Okay I may just be going out of my mind but my question is has anyone ever been scammed on a rental house deal? May sound weird but here is my dilemma. I found this house for rent on craigslist and the owner has contacted me via email, well my husband finally got to talk to them and the house is one of those to good to be true deals low rent and a very very nice new home. The owner has relocated to West Africa and is not in the area so if we want to rent the house we are to pay the first month rent and they send the keys via fedex. I was very excited at first and I am still now but maybe I am just worring for nothing but I want to be sure we are talking about money and I dont wanna be scammed. HOw would I go about finding out if these people are real and that I am not (if I choice to rent this house) sending money to someone who is going to take my money and run?? Like I said it may just be me but I want to be sure. Thank you for you help in advance!!!

So What Happened?

Ok so I had no idea that people could be so horrible!!! Anyways after posting this I recieved some help from a lot of wonderful mothers (thank you, thank you , thank you) we found out that the house was indeed a rental house but was not anything close to what they said it to be. I came to find out that this was a scam. After my husband conversated with the "suppose husband" we have not heard from these people again. Some of my friends told me that the news had actually had something about this and PLEASE PLEASE everyone beware of these kinds of scams I am glad that I was curious. It hurts to think what if I would have indeed fallin for this scam and what I would have done to come up with that money to pay for rent for my family so that we would not have to be evicted from our home now. Please don't risk your money do not put it out on the table for anyone!! Hope that this helps someone else out there!!!!!!!!!!

im not sure what you would do to figure it out, but it sounds like a total scam to me!!! rentals are actually going up in price right now because its so hard to get a house financed. if it sounds too good to be true , it is!

SCAMMMMMMM!!!! I do childcare through craigslist and people will do anything! I have people from the UK, Africa, London, all trying to get you to give them personal info and $! Be very Vary! Do not send your money to these people. If it's too good to be true, it probably is!

Have you gotten to look at the house at all? I used to do childcare and posted on Craigslist. I got several emails from people that were "going to be moving here" and were looking for childcare. Some how it always ended up that they were from W. Africa or traveled there frequently, etc. Anyways they all ended up being scams so I would assume this is as well.

You could also do your research to find out if they are indeed the owners of the house. You can go to the county website (I know Dallas county is www.dallascad.org) where the house sits and obtain the name of the owners of that address and see if that matches their names. Also, let them know that you will be checking it out and you will probably find out real fast if they are legit or not by their reaction. No one that is being honest will fault you for wanting to make sure you are not getting into something that will hurt your family.

Yes I would be AWARE too. There was a show on Dr Phil about scammers and it had different scams that were through craigslist and they tracked them down to W Africa.
The had the police and Investigators and they had how with International law they can't arrest them.

But basicly they said don't send money on faith because you won't get it back.

I would definately investigate, but I wouldn't unless they had a agent here to show you the place and all.

It's a scam. NEVER do business with anyone that you can physically see at some point in the transaction when money is changing hands. Trust me...once you send the money, you will never see the keys. They house may exist but it may not belong to the person you are dealing with.

If you are looking for a rental house, go through a real estate agent.

We own a home in San Angelo, Texas which we rent out. Even though it is only a few hours drive away we use a real estate agency to manage the property. I can't imagine living in another country and trying to rent out a property, especially a nice one. There are just too many things to take care of as the land owner. Another place you can look to verify the owners is the Tax records. You could also simply drive by the property and talk to the neighbors. Even if they don't know the owners they will know if it is a rental home. You could also get a real estate agent to investigate, and help you find a rental home. The home owners pay the agent not you. Defiantly don't send money till you verify everything. Good Luck.
