D & C What to Expect?

I've been having a heavy, never-ending period since July. Since medication (Provera) didn't work to stop it, my doctor has indicated I'll need a D & C (dialation & curette). Can anyone give me any advice or comments on what to expect? I've never had my uterus scrapped, but everyone tells me it's "no big deal" (of course, that's coming from people who've never been through it)
Thank you.

What can I do next?

I actually just had one last Wednesday. I was put under, and they were done within about 15 minutes according to my husband. I had some fairly bad cramping immediately after, but they put hot blankets on my abdomen, and that helped a lot. I had bleeding for a couple of days, then nothing, and started a period-like bleeding two days later with really bad cramps. I was prescribed Darvoset for pain and only had to take it three times.

Hello. I had a D&C following a miscarriage about 2 years ago. You are out for the entire ordeal and there is just some cramping when you wake up. Heavy Ibuprofen will take care of it, it isn't too bad really. As long as you don't get sick from the anesthesia you will do fine. Good luck!

Hi D.,
I had a D&C last year due to a miscarriage. I was scared to death, but it was fine. They will put you to sleep and then you'll basically have a period for a couple of days and that's it. I didn't even have any cramping. Compared to letting a miscarriage pass naturally, which I did two times, it was super easy. Best of luck...

I had one due to a second miscarriage. I was put under and so it truely was no big deal. I'm not sure if they all are the same. I believe you can even work the next day. Good luck.

In May I had a D&C, and the Novasure abalation. I was off my feet for a few days and sore for a few more. I was having the same problem with my periods. since the surgery my periods are very light you should talk to your Dr about the Novasure.

I've had 2 D and C's. Make sure you have "supplies" on hand afterward as you will still have bleeding but it should help your problem. For the first 2 days after mine, I was sore (like a stomach ache) but a heating pad did work with this. Don't worry, it really isn't that bad and if it helps controll the bleeding you having, it works. Good luck and God bless.

No big deal at all (I'm assuming that you will have a general anesthesia). At most, some cramping afterwards, similar to a period and generally relieved with Motrin or other OTC pain relievers (but don't hesitate to ask for some good ole Motrin 800!).

Probably some light bleeding or spotting for a few days following, but you should be able to resume normal activities within a few days, if not the next day.

Good luck, and don't worry. As these things go, it's fairly simple.

PS--if this is a big problem and you are not planning to have more children, you may want to ask about uterine ablation. A close friend had years of endometriosis following childbirth and this procedure completely relieved her symptoms. It means you will be sterile (as I understand it), but if you are not planning for any more children, this shouldn't be a problem and may even be a relief!

I had one almost 3 years ago due to a miscarriage. It wasn't a big deal afterwards. Worst part for me was thinking about going under. When I woke up it felt like I had just feel asleep a minute before. The nurse got me up and out of bed had a little water and crackers and left. I even went into the pharmacy with my husband to go get my RX, which I barely even used. I bleed I think lightly for a week. Then I was all back to normal.

I had to have a D&C after my first daughter because some of the placenta was stuck and I wouldn't stop bleeding. Granted, the epidural was still in effect but it didn't take long and I didn't notice any pain afterwards. I'm sure they will give you some sort of numbing so you don't feel anything during the process.

Been there done that and really in the end it is no big deal! I just hate going under anesthesia! I had mild cramping for about 2 days but MUCH MUCH less than a "normal" period for me.

The best thing was the next month my hubby did not feel like he had to build an Ark at bedtime so he did not float away with me! I was able to sleep with only 1 pad on for the first time in years after sleeping with 2 pads AND a tampon!!

Bad thing for me was it only lasted about 3 years. Right now hubby is starting his Ark comments again! lol My Gyne suggested the Uterine Ablation but after researching it I am not comfortable with it even though I have my one tube tied and other ovary removed so there will be no more children for me. I am considering doing the D&C again though.... we shall see!

So with all that said... relax it really is no big deal!! Make sure when you get home that you play it off as you are in total pain and get all the pampering you deserve!!! Milk it! LOL

Good luck and many blessings to you for a speedy recovery!

I have heard my mother tell my aunts about her D & C. She said it hurt way less than child birth, and that she felt so much better afterwards. That the week of slight discomfort was worth it to make the bleeding stop and get her energy back! Just focus on how much better you will feel when you are healed up!

I have had it done and it really is no big deal. They put you in a twilight. I can' remember how long I bled after that, but I remember having to wear a pad. Your periods will be less heavy. They are just cleaning out the uterus that has all this gunk built up.

I had this done last year at Edward Hospital because I also kept bleeding. (Not the result of a miscarriage.) My experience at Edward was great. I got there early in the morning. They prepped me and didn't put me in the operating room until the very last minute. The last thing I remember was seeing the anesthesiologist. When I woke up, it was all over. I didn't feel any pain. I had just a tiny bit of cramping for a day or two. I didn't get my period for two months though. Since you work full time, I would ask to have the surgery on a Friday. You can be back to work on Monday like nothing ever happened. One more nugget of info. After I got home from the surgery, I took the pain medication they gave me and got the best sleep I've had in YEARS! Good luck!

I had a D&C along with laproscopic surgery. It went pretty quickly . I was sensitive for about a week or so. You can take some motrin /advil regularly to get through the discomfort. I was scared going in but once it was over it was really nothing to worry about. Hope this helps:)

I did have one, and i will reiterate the "no big deal" . . . you do go under which is always risky . . . but i dont recall any pain or issues after the fact . . . i had to have one because i had a pregnancy go really bad starting my third trimester and then i was having problems still 5 or so months later, and they were concerned that "some" was still in there (after doing other tests) . . . so i was wanting it done and done fast . . . i remember after the fact my heart rate kept on setting off alarms cause it was so low and my husband and i were stupidly trying to see how "low" i could go . . . but just making light out of a not so fun situation . . . and they gave me these wonderful leggings that i still use as long underwear when it is really cold . . . dont stress, but act like it is a big deal so you get a lot of husband support :)

I had one with my last miscarriage. It really was no big deal other than they knocked me out and that is always slightly risky.
