Dad's 60Th Birthday

I have been searching for the "perfect gift" for my father's 60th birthday and haven't come up with anything yet! The four of us "kids" are going in on something so we have between $450-500 to spend.
My father is a very well educated guy, loves to read, doesn't have much use for lots of material things/knick-knacks. He started a company a few years back and has been working on this business with 5 other partners for the last few years. He does like to golf, but isn't into random golf "stuff". He and my mother own a boat with another couple, but that couple doesn't like them to "embelish" it with decorations or anything so if it was something boat related, it couldn't be decor.
I would PREFER something really special - either something sentimental from the kids (we were going to hire a photographer at our family gathering this year, but my mom did that last year!) or a life experience etc.
Anyway, if anyone has any great ideas, I'd love some Help!!!! :)
Thanks in advance!

I have a great gift idea for your Dad. Why not make him a storybook about his life? I make books for my clients and I also show them how to make books themselves. It is easy and something that is sure to be treasured always.

Here is an example of a book I made for my client's wife's 50th birthday:http://www.heritagemakers.com/projectBrowserStandAlone.cf...

and one I did for my Grandparent's 60th Wedding anniversary: http://www.heritagemakers.com/projectBrowserBWC.cfm?proje...

Please let me know if you are interested. You can go to my website to see more ideas and then contact me directly so I can give you my special pricing. www.storybookfamily.com

Thanks,

Hi M.,

I've given this gift twice - my dad's 60th and my grandma's 85th birthday. It's called a Memory Jar or Box. Basically whoever you want to include writes down favorite memories of the recipiant and puts them in the jar or box. I included siblings, cousins, friends, children and grandchildren. When I gave the memory box to my grandmother I even wrote down some of the memories my mom used to tell about her childhood because she had passed away.

Both my dad and grandmother loved their gifts. My grandma said it was the best present she had ever received and everyone at her party thought the idea was wonderful. I loved it because it shows the birthday boy or girl how much they have touched other people lives by living their own. I hope you do it for your dad.

One of the best ideas I have ever heard of came from another mama. It is Voicequilt. It is basically inexpensive but requires you to put a lot of time into arranging calls from friends and family to an 800 number. This is so meaningful because it gives people a chance to say those things one usually does not share until someone is gone. Just let them know what they mean in your life.

Hope this helps you as much as it helped me.

What about a tree? For that amount of money you could get a good sized tree and a plaque that says something about the family tree spreading out from him. Something like that. It would likely make him smile whenever he saw it, but doesn't require a lot of work on anyone's part. Trees are nice because they serve as a real visual reminder of how time is passing. Also, the whole family can enjoy it and use it as a base for family pictures, etc. Good luck!
