My 6 year old daughter was born with a full head of thick beautiful curls. As a baby and toddler her hair was gorgeous right before she started kindergarten last year... I cut her hair to shoulder length. I was getting too hard to handle and I thought it would help her curl come back some because it was so heavy that it was being pulled to wavys. Well thats what I thought but no. Her hair is very wavy now! Thick, heavy wavys. Her hair has grown back out almost as long (and been cut again at her request and grown back out again) the curls didn't come back. I've also had layers cut in it, the underneath of her hair was "thinned out" with layers too to try and help- nope! We started using dove conditioner and her hair is much softer and easier to comb/brush but unless she showers in the morning and lets her hair air dry without being touched by a comb/brush/hood/ etc. it always looks messy. When it airdries it gets some of the ringlet curls back in her hair. But it is really hard to get a first grader up earlier to shower before school every day.... so she wears alot of ponytails and braids. She loves her hair straightened (thanks to teenage aunts) but I don't have the time or patients for that and I know its not good for her hair to do that often.
Any advise on how to control this hair, make it look cute not messy? Products, and procedures? Thanks moms.

Maybe try adding spray-in conditioner to dry/damp hair in the morning, then run some pomade through her waves to separate them a bit (like the previous post recommended). I swore by spray-in conditioner when my step-daughter was growing up. She had the longest, thickest, most wavy hair ever! Good luck!

I also have curly hair and didn't really learn how to care for it until I was about 20... basically in your situation the only time you should be brushing her hair is if you are styling it or after a bath. When her hair is wet, run a large tooth comb through it - that's it. You might want to get some large clips and put her hair up before bedtime so it isn't so tangled in the morning. She should be able to shake her hair out in the morning and that is all.

You don't want to use too much detangler or leave-in conditioner because it isn't that great for her hair, but try a couple brands to see what your like and what works best for her. After a shower I use Anti-friz stuff called "frizz Ease" that works great (it is the only product that I need). They don't carry it at Sally's anymore but you can get it at WalMart.

My daughter has the same issue and let me tell you I used to stress because I did not have the time in the morning to wash her hair. But what I did is I made my own detangler in a spray bottle I mixed a really good conditioner/moisturizer with water. (I used the new Suave Professional Humectant Conditioner.) Mix w/ water so it's not too thick (half and half.) Then, I use a frizz-ease type serum, so many out there but I use Fructis Anti Frizz Serum Sleek & Shine to finish it off. We get through the day without crazy looking hair. I wash her hair every other day. We've managed to look decent a lot of the time, but sometimes we have our crazy days!

Hope it helps...Good Luck!

I am white and have very tight curly hair that is extremely thick and coarse. I finally found a style I like but still put too much product in my hair that makes it stiff and sticky. I was told about a product and gave it a try. I no longer use hairspray or anything else! It is wonderful. Please don't be turned off by the name and consider getting the sample to try it out. www.mixedchicks.net

I've always had thick, long, curly hair and spent alot of money over the years to find something to work. Finally I found Care Free Curl however it is a ethnic hair product but not greasy, you can't feel it's in your hair. It's the only product that I found to work for me. Even after I had my 3rd child my hair ended being less curly but with this product and some heat from a blow dryer and scrunching your hair with your hands while you dry it alot of my curl came back. Hope this helps.

Instead of washing it in the morning can you add some Detangler to it? My sister does this with her daughter's hair that is thick and curly. Also, try a pomade.
