Decorating a 2 and Half Year Old's Bedroom (Help)

I have a 2 1/2 yr old who will be 3 in August. I am pregnant and will have a baby in June (another girl). I am thinking of redecorating my daughter's bedroom before the new baby is born. Right now, her walls are a very adult colored neutral (like tealish) with flower decals (those nice removable ones). My new baby will go into the nursery and her bedcoverings match the flower decals so...I plan on removing them from my daughters room. The 2 yr old has a pink princess comforter with a white bed skirt. I am thinking of doing multicolored butterflies and getting a white valence curtain. She LOVES disney princess's but I think I will get sick of them reallly fast.... WHat do you think? Also I need a white valance style curtain (it has blinds as well) but know nothing about curtains. Also what color should i paint the walls? I didn't really want to do serious pink or purple (gosh I am surrounded by the stuff) but I am really really terrible picking out neutral colors... Any ideas? or specific paint colors you could refer me to? (I live near Lowes and Home Depot).

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

So I think the plan is to keep the bedspread (which is disney characters but easily changeable and new). She has a white bed skirt so i am gonna put a white valence curtain in (and leave the wood blinds that actually block light), paint the walls a rather neutral color (like a cream or even a very light rose or peach) and I ordered realistic butterfly decals for the walls. I figure with the neutral colored walls and curtain, I can always easily get rid of the bedspread and butterflies and replace for another new look. I'll have to pick swatches up at home depot and bring them home to compare.

I did our DD's room in Lemon Mint from Valspar (I believe) that we got from Lowe's - it a kind of spring green without being too yellow. I got some wall decals from Pottery Barn Kids that are butterflies, ladybugs, snails, grass and flowers, etc. I didn't go too crazy with the decorating but it's got a little bit of a garden theme going, nothing permanent, and the decals just peel off without damaging the paint. There are some touches of pink here and there and I really like how they stand out with the light green. I also got the dollhouse bookshelf from Target (white with pink roof and window trim) - very cute. I figure when she outgrows it it will be easy enough to change it up!

I just got through doing my toddler's room. I painted it a clear blue satin sheen and put up Mickey decals--it is cute. I love Lowe's Valspar Signature paint. It is a primer and paint in one and it is great. Home Depot carries the Behr, but I think the Lowe's Valspar is so much better. I have already painted three rooms with this paint. It costs around $35 a gallon, but it is worth every penny. I'm terrible at picking out colors too, so here's what I do. Go to Lowe's and get several swatches of various paint colors. You can be safe and go with a taupe like Valspar Outlands Subtle Taupe which is a nice, rich, neutral color, but not too blah and looks good with just about everything including in the bedroom. Paint the ceiling white--and wow...it looks great. NEVER pick out a paint color in the store though and buy it. Always bring the swatches home and put place the swatches up against the wall during the brightest time of the day and during sundown to see how the color will look like at different times. Here's another trick: Go to Pittsburgh Paints website. They have a feature called voice of color. What you can do is select a room on there and pick different colors on the pallets (sp), and that will give you an idea of what color will look best. Come to think of it, I think Lowe's now has that feature too on their website under the paint section. As far as curtains go, how bright is the room at bedtime? Certain types of curtains will let too much sunlight in. How about a shade--the kind that doesn't have a string, the one you pull down and push up by hand? You can get one that blocks light or one that doesn't. I think the Princess theme is cute.

Hope this helps,

M.

I did my DD's room in "palmetto" which is a nice, neutral springy green color and did a white bed, white bookshelf, pink and white toybox, Pastel colored organizer bins, and I painted a nightstand white with a pink drawer, and another bookshelf pink and green.
I've added a pastel colored rug, pink and green photo frames, etc. Her room is super cute and springy. Everyone compliments me on it. I'd stay away from "character" stuff. I made that mistake with my first born. Spent WAY too much money doing "High School Musical" and it lasted 9 months. We also did Disney Princess before that. It lasted a year. Go with colors and not characters.

Just as an FYI:
Little girls, outgrow the "Princess" phase.
Mine did, in Kindergarten.
So, if you decorate in Princess themes, just use smallish not expensive type decorations. ie: area rug, removable wall decals, etc. I believe Walmart online has lots.

But for now, your girl is a Toddler, who likes Princess stuff. :)

What is also nice are "sunny" happy colors. So you do not have to use the obligatory "pink" color:
Orange
yellow
white trims
Turquoise blue
Lime or Apple green
Offsetting the 'brighter' colors, with a neutral trim or accent trim. And to add interest.
You could also put cute sayings or quotes on the wall.
Or with a laundry line... put one in her room to hang up paintings or artwork she makes. Its a cute 'accessory.'

There is a nice neutral pink color that you can get, almost a rose color. When you look at it, it almost looks white but in the sun and light it has a pretty tint to it. I think the butterflies and flowers is a sweet idea. What about adding kittens to it? Make it like a spring time room with different decals you can put up, like a tree, and birds, butterflies, kittens, all that.

I got a paint color from Lowe's called Vermont Cream. It is a lovely creamy white color.
