Does the depo shot hurt any worse than a normal shot? I am terrified of shots, haven't had one since I was alot younger so I really don't even remember what that feels like, however I need to some form of birth control and the depo shot lasts for 3 months and I figured that would be best for me since my hubby is getting a vasectomy next month.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your advice! I am definitely leaning more towards the pill now! I do not want the side effects of the shot. Thank you so much!

I seriously beg you to do your homework... soooooooo many people have lifelong side effects from depo... I would strongly encourage you to look at other options, especially for such a short time :)

I know the shot does hurt more than regular shots from what others have told me.

BUT

Please look into what it does, I have only ever known one person who was happy with it and the side effects, but I have known many many many who wish they had NEVER taken it!

Stay away from Depo! It wrecked my body hormonally when I was on it.

I took the shot for 10+ years - no the shot did not hurt...maybe for 10 seconds and that was it. No big deal at all. Also I had no long term or other side effects. I thought that it was great. Will say did not have period for most of the 10 years - which I thought was great.

only for a month? rather than something as risky as depo, why not just use a condom or sponge?

Do not do depo! try anything else but that. I gained 28 pounds in 9 months and had serious pregnancy symptoms the hole time. It also took me about a year after stopping the depo to get my period back. I was in constant pain for several months before getting on the pill. I would not recommend it for anyone. I worked with a woman years ago that ended up with a blood clot in her leg due to it as well.

Depo has been found to increase breast cancer risk:

http://www.lifenews.com/2012/06/11/study-depo-provera-use...

"The group notes a study of 1,028 women ages 20-44 in the April 15, 2012 issue of Cancer Research found that recent users of Depo Provera (DMPA) for 12 months or more had a statistically significant 2.2-fold increased risk of developing invasive breast cancer.

The authors, Christopher Li and his team (including Janet Daling) at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center called it the “first large scale U.S. study” examining the link between Depo Provera and breast cancer. They concluded it’s the fifth study “conducted over a diverse group of countries that have observed that recent DMPA use is associated with a 1.5- to 2.3-fold increased risk of breast cancer.”"
“Cancer groups should have implemented a nationwide awareness campaign about the DMPA-breast cancer link, but it’s no surprise they didn’t,” Malec continued. “They’ve lied to women about the risks of abortion, oral contraceptives and combined hormone replacement therapy for decades. They still haven’t reported that two studies since 2009 strongly linked oral contraceptive use with the deadly triple-negative breast cancer.”

Please don't get it. It really isn't worth the gamble. I was only on it for 6 months and I swear it was the worse six months of any birth control I had ever been on. If you get migraines this is not a form of BC you want to be on. I had one so severe that I swore death was better option. I wanted to die and with having migraines since I was a young teen I had never had one that bad. The usual meds I took didn't even offer relief.
I gained 50 pounds in that time frame despite eating right and exercising properly. I bleed the entire time.
Do some research on this drug. I wish I had. If I had known it was used to chemically castrate sex offenders. That in some places like China higher doses are used to cause infertility. Also not to long ago the FDA suggested that Depo be black labeled. In other words women who use it are only suppose to be on it a set amount of time. During that time is suggested they get bone density testing done. Also remember any side effects you have wont just up and go away...you are stuck with them til the shot wears off which is 3 months or longer. Yes the side effects can last past when the shot is suppose to wear off.
So please look at other choices like condoms for the time frame you need protection.

It's kinda like a tetnis shot. It does hurt but it's over really fast. The injection site will be sore for a few days, but nothing HORRIBLE.

As to the side effects... I was on it for about a year and the only side effect that I experienced was mild depression. I have heard A LOT of very serious side effects from using the depo shot though (Which is why I decided to stop) so I would do some more research on it.

When I stopped using the depo, I started using the birth control patch. Maybe that is something that you could look into as well?
