Developmental Assessment Testing

Can anyone direct me as to how to go about getting developmental assessment testing for my three year old son? He overall seems to be developing at a reasonable pace, though I feel he may need to be in a different school environment with fewer students per teacher, and at the same time I want to make sure I'm not missing something (we've been having a lot of behavioral issues lately at his daycare and home). I am just beginning to research more specialized preschools, though don't want to miss anything while I go about making a decision on what may be best for my son.

So What Happened?

Have spoken with Black Bear Preschool and Tuesday's Child. Both are exceptional facilities and their offerings are fantastic in helping to determine his areas of need. Am still making a final decision however I feel I have a lot of great information to work with.

I am in the process of having my 2 year old son evaluated now. You can go thru Early Intervention (it is free thru the state) 1-800-323-4763. Then they will give you a # to the nearest office to you. Hope this helped

Call you school district. As the other post states it is the law they must evaluate and give you services free if he qualifies! Most kids will get up to speed and go to kindergarten in great shape!! Insist that your school evaluate and fight for what you want. They have small classes usually abotu 10 kids and at least 2 teachers with one teacher having a degree in Early Childhood Education. The schools fill up fast however it is law they must get you in if your child qualifies!!

Have you contacted your local school district to see what their procedure is for developmental assessment? Since your son is three, he is old enough to fall under the services of the school district.

Also, your pediatrician should be able to refer you to someone. If not, there are places you can go yourself, though I'm not sure exactly how it works in regards to insurance and payment. Illinois Masonic has a huge pediatric development center. You might also try to contact Jewish Children and Family Services (you don't have to be Jewish to receive services) and see what they have available. There are also pediatricians who specialize in development, and though I don't know names, I know that there are some who practice out of Children's Memorial.

Hi R.,

By law, you can get assessed through your local school district when your children turn 3. Starting there is a way to get started. Call them and see if you can make an appointment or when they have scheduled preschool screening days. Good luck!

Speak to your child's teachers. They will have picked up on any delays or problems and will be able to point them out to you. Most schools have an assessment team able to test your child if needed. Also talk to your pediatrician. You may be worrying needlessly. If not, he/she will be able to point you in the right direction for testing.

Hi R.- I had been a teacher for children with special needs in Michigan and just want to echo what the previous posts were- Contact your local school district. Screening is required for preschool children. After the screening you will have more information. Also I would talk to you ped about your concerns and specialists you could be put in contact with.
Good Luck

Hi R.,

You can have your child assessed for any cognitive, emotional or social delays through the "Programs for Children with Disabilities: Ages 3 Through 5". The number is: 800-441-4563. It's actually a program through Wisconsin state schools. My son was actually born with disabilities and transitioned from the Birth to Three Program right into this program, so I'm not precisely certain on the channels to go through. However, they are always so very helpful to direct you in the right direction. Good Luck and please contact me if you have any questions.

R.,
The first thing I was wondering is where do you live? We took my son when he was just getting ready to turn 3 to Hope Wall to be evaluated. He came out as untestable and he got into their preschool program. They are only allowed to have 9 at the most per class and that is with the teacher and 1 or 2 aides. If you would like more information, let me know. Hope Wall is a special school and it might be just that your son needs this extra care for just preschool. I would recommend this school to anyone looking for special services and care. my son is now 4 and we love it there. it is in Aurora.
