I took my 12 month old daughter for her well baby check up and shots yesterday. Upon examination her pediatrician (whom I trust) heard a popping when she checked her hips. She was concerned and told me it could be nothing, just a ligament, or worse case scenerio (which I prodded her to tell me) it could be developmental hip dyplasia. She has referred us to Scottish Rite for further testing and a second opinion. She said what goes in our favor is that my daughters legs are straight and she has been walking since 8 1/2 months. I looked up the disorder on web MD so I have read a little about it and its treatment. I am scared to death. Has anyone's child been diagnosed with this? What type of treatment did it require? Is there long term effects of this or was it corrected with treatment? I would appreciate any information available.
I had hip dysplasia and had to wear casts on my legs at 12 months. I am perfectly fine. My daughter had a hip-click at birth, so we double-diapered for 2 weeks. She is fine now.
Not sure if this is related to Legg Calve Perthes Disease or not, but sounds similar. I had that when I was a child. I won't go into it since I am not sure if it is related, but if you find that it is something you need to know more about, feel free to message me and I'd be happy to discuss it with you. And for the record and to save some worry, I did have to have a lot of treatment, but it was not painful and there are no lasting effects. Good luck.
I think my friend's baby was born with hip dysplasia. She had to take the baby to Scottish Rite for testing. Her baby was a lot younger than your child and she was told to make the baby wear 2 diapers to support the hip. The baby is 2 years old now and runs EVERYWHERE!! The doctor probably just wants to be safe. I'm sure all is well.
I believe hip dysplasia is basically where the ball of the leg bone is not completely resting is the socket of the hip, causing a click.
My little girl was born breech. The stats show that little girls born breech are 20 times more likely to have this condition. So, my pedi sent us in for a sonogram, and sure enough her right hip was loose. They prescribed no treatment, because in most cases the baby outgrows the condition. After several other rounds of sonograms, sure enough, she outgrew it. At 10 months, I will take her in for an xray (since the xray at this point is a better picture than sonogram) just to double check.
I know when the pedi orthopedist first described the condition, he said that it was important for us to follow up with the sonograms because "the last thing we want is for your daughter to started walking, and then you realize that she has a limp." I tell you this because I think that if your daughter is not limping, there's a very good chance that everything is A OK!!! Good luck!
I daughter was sent for this test and turned out she did not have anything. So I will pray for you. I know a child that had it had they years ago about 40 broke her legs and she was in casts but it never stopped her. Mom said she traveled around without even noticing they were there. To me I do not think she has it.
My friend's daughter has hip dyplasia. She was diagnosed b/t 2 wks and 1 month old. She had to wear braces on her legs for 23 hours a day for about 6 weeks. After that, she had to wear it for 12 hours a day. Other than not being able to dress her in cute dresses, my friend said it's not that bad. And it's better to catch it early b/c it's easier to correct.
