Diastasis?

I am pregnant with my 2nd baby, due in November, but I'm wondering about something I noticed after my first baby was born 15 months ago. (I was just starting to really think about doing something about it when I found out I was pregnant again!)

I have a gap, about 1.5 inches wide between my stomach muscles. When I lay on the floor and tighten the muscles, my skin drops down into this gap. (Sorry, that sounds gross). Anyway, I was reading about diastasis, but from what I can tell, this condition makes your stomach stick out, not sink in. (My stomach does *not* stick out & my belly returned to it's normal, flat self a few months after I had my daughter.) I also read something about muscle separation. Is this the same thing? Does anyone know what I can do after I have my 2nd baby to get this back to normal?

Thanks!

What can I do next?

PILATES, PILATES, PILATES -- done the RIGHT way. You'll need to wait until you're about 8 weeks postpartum (more if you've had a C-section) for your body to be able to try these exercises correctly....even then, don't be discouraged if you can barely do them. Keep at it and you will see them getting easier each time. The key to pilates (you have to suck your stomach in to your backbone the whole time) is that it really strengthens your core muscles. Sit-ups will not help your condition (I know, I had it too, and now it is gone with the help of pilates) because sit-ups strengthen your vertical abdominal muscles. Pilates will pull those horizontal muscles together to close the gap. You MUST learn to do pilates correctly, though. So go to a class with a decent teacher (someone who is certified in pilates) for a few sessions until you learn how to do it right (I was lucky enough to find a great teacher at my local YMCA)...then you can get videos and do it at home if you want to save money.

Best wishes!

I have the same problem, or had rather. My midwife told me to go home and look into the tupler technique. It is very simple and can be done practically anywhere at anytime. I am currently pregnant with my third child and after doing this my stomach looks like a normal pregnant belly instead of something that is spilling out every where. It is important to keep up with it and continue - it will also make your pregnancy much more comfortable in the end since your lower stomach muscles shouldn't have to make up for the lack of work your upper muscles are having to do.
Good luck to you and I hope it all works out for you.

i would have it double checked to be sure you do not have a hernia. i have one near my belly button and i do not have where the interstines push through, so i have not had to have it repaired yet. best of luck! M.

There's a book called "Lose YOur Mummy Tummy" It covers the whole subject thoroughly and you can get it inexpensively on amazon.com. Mine was about $4.88.
