Digital Camera Recommendations

Does anyone have a digital camera recommendation? The one we have now is about 5 years old and loses a battery very quickly. I'd like something lightweight, fits in a purse, is good with action shots, strong battery hold (or easy re-charge), and is compatible with a SD memory card. Any information would be really helpful. Thanks!

I am a professional photographer and I use the Canon SD750 for my every day point and shoot camera. It is awesome. It has a fast shutter, 7.1 mega pixels and Canons face recognition. It also has a very large LCD screen which is nice. Great great camera!!!

I really like my Canon PowerShot SD600 Digital Elph. There are newer versions out ther, but I caution you to consider getting one with the viewfinder and not just the larger screen or it can be difficult to see what you are shooting in strong light or darkness.

the CASIO EXILIM is the best. It takes great movies as well as still shots. It fits in my pocket/purse whatever I'm wearing. I have 4 digital cameras, all use SD cards, all for different uses. I have the Kodak Easy Share-my first digital, great camera, just didn't fit in my pocket. A Pentex K100, an SLR, for the perfect pictures, and an underwater camera the Sealife Eco shot. I'm a picky camera person, and for what it sounds like you want, I'd go with the Casio. Good luck and if you have any questions, you can contact me. :)Sue

I agree on the Canon Cybershot line. I don't have the number on mine right now but it used to be DSC70 and I think the new one is similar to what someone else described. I like having the option to do movies and the auto-focus pictures.

One thing to watch for on the movie cameras is the sound. The higher priced models play back the sound on the camera. The lower priced models require that you load the movie to the computer before it plays sound with your video. It was a deciding factor for me because I often share pics and movies right from the camer itself but may not be a factor for others.

Hi A.,

My husband and I really did our homework when we went shopping for digital cameras for our kids. Out oldest daughter (18) will be off to college this fall and will minor in photography. A few years ago we bought her an Olympus camera and she absolutely loves it!!! She has traveled to Europe and several of her photos are better than the postcards she brought home. Since she keeps her camera in her purse all the time, I'm not sure of the model number etc. Our youngest daugher(14) will be traveling to Europe this summer and we got her any Olympus as well (model FE-280, 8 megapixel). The quality of those prints and the ease of use is great.

We purchased both cameras at Circuit City--they have the best prices along with the best service. We did purchase the additional insurance for both cameras (mainly for damage if dropped--you know how teenagers can be!!!). Nikon is a great camera as well but not within our budget. Canon are ok but Olympus is better.

Happy Shopping :)

The Panasonic Lumix is the best one I have ever had. I have had it over a year, take pictures almost daily and I have had to charge the battery only twice.

I have an Olympus C-700. I got it as a christmas gift a few years ago. I end up having to share it too (I don't like that as in sharing something all of a sudden doesn't close properly)
This camera I absolutely love, tho. 4 AA batteries, a memory card, a film feature of 15 seconds,...
Go on ebay and look for something. I might just get a second one like mine so I can properly take care of it.

Hi,
My parents just got a Fuji for their only grandchild, my daughter. While I don't know what kind exactly I would recommend getting a movie feature so you can take movies of your son like a camcorder. We have had more fun with this feature.

HI,
I have the Samsung NV3. It is the BEST camara that we've ever had. I almost never charge it. I got it for Christmas and used it at Disney for 10 days and only charged it once in that time. The cord to recharge and to down load are the same. There is a removeable plug piece to plug into the wall, so you only have to keep track of one cord. It is compatible with a SD card. It is very small and fits great in my small purse. I keep it there so I never miss a picture moment. It not only takes pictures but video and has an MP3 player. There are several other things that it does but I haven't got that far yet. You can change the effect of the pictures you take to black and white, there are also green, red, blue and sepia options. My husband got it at Target or Wal-mart for about $250. It's a great little camara and I highly recommend it!

We love our Cannon Powershot. It is small and fits in my purse, but even better Daddy can slip it in his pocket so it is not bogging down mom with one more thing. It takes amazing pictures, and we have never had a battery problem. When we wanted to upgrade to more features we stayed with the powershot series as well. I am not exactly sure which model we have right now but it is in the elph series. Here is a link to there website.

Olympus is a great brand. We bought the SP-500UZ two years ago just before our trip to Europe and absolutely love it. I would not suggest this model for you though because it does not fit in a purse very well. It's not a compact camera. I would suggest buying the Olympus brand, they have the best reputation, says my husband who researches everything about electronics before we buy it. Hope this helps.

I love my Polaroid i735. It is 7.0 megapixels, 12x zoom, 2.5" color screen on back. The buttons are in the perfect places (on back verses on top so you can see it when you take a picture).

It has a video, audio and of course still picture setting. Video setting works like a charm and is superb. On a 1GB card, you can get 15-20 minutes. Even if you use up the entire card, you can still get about 10 minutes on it. The 2GB I think makes it closer to an hour if I remember correctly. It also let's you play it back right away - don't have to load anything, just like with a camcorder. Comes with attachments to plug into the computer and the TV

Lots of "settings" you can put it on i.e. action, kids, snow/beach,nighttime, backlight. Firework setting doesn't work though. Plus it has the SD memory card. It also has a plastic cover on the front so that the camera doesn't get scratched, dirty, etc. Easy to use, small and all the features of a more expensive camera. It is only $100 at Walmart, other stores it ranges between $120-170. It comes a vareity of different colors. It is perfect for my scrapbooking, picture taking and I HIGHLY recommend it.

I would recommend the Elph by Cannon. My photographer friend has a 4,000 dollar camera that she takes pictures with in her studio and then for when she is out and about she carries her Elph, so she can whip it out very quickly to take pictures of her sons and she doesn't have to worry about lugging her 4,000 dollar camera around which is quite big. From what I have heard it is a VERY nice camera, it's 4.3 oz, 8.3 Mega pixels and since it is a newer one the batteries should last a while, as long as you get the right kind, if you get regular batteries they will drain really fast, you need to get lithium ion batteries, or ones made specifically for cameras and if you buy rechargeable ones you will save alot of money.

Go to cannon's website and do a search for the Elph, they have quite a few different models and in different price ranges, I think you will like it.

Hi, A.! We have gone through at least 5 digital cameras in the last 10+ years, so I know your struggle to find the right one. My current (and favorite) one is the Canon Power Shot SD8000IS Digital Elph. It has a large viewing screen, takes video (depending on the size of your SD card--I've got a 2G) for longer than the anticipated 30 seconds, has a "pets and kids" setting that is the best action-capture feature on any of our film or digital cameras. The battery lasts a long time, and I bought an extra batery and charger when ordering the camera so I can pop in a fresh battery when needed and put the tired one on a charger. I notoced it was listed in Consumer Reports among the best of the sub-compacts.
Good luck! J. B.

I researched digital cameras extensively before Christmas. I ended up with a Sony T-200. The battery didn't last as long as the T-100 that I had tested last summer. I looked on line until I found a extended life battery. It lasts a very long time. The Sony doesn't take a SD card but if you pick the camera that you want buy an extra battery. It is really nice to have the option, if your battery goes dead, of popping in a fresh battery. There is a Casio that is small and is good with action shots etc. I don't know how long the original battery lasts. If you do research, they have the information in the manufacture description on line. You could also check reviews from CNET.com. Good luck!

After months of research, I bought the FujiFilm FinePix F30 in November 2006. I rarely have to charge it and I love how the photos turn out! DO NOT BUY the FinePix F20, though (it's the next step down). My father in law bought the F20 based on me raving about the F30 (F30 was more expensive), and has already had to send it back to the company TWICE in the past year for repairs. I have no complaints about my camera. I use it for family vacations, candid shots of my daughter, and to take photos of items I list on eBay and Etsy.com (a craft marketplace where i list my handmade items). Check out http://www.dpreview.com/ for excellent digital camera reviews and buying advice. Also, butterflyphoto.com has great package deals-- includes a case, cleaning kit, and extra XD picture card for photo storage.

I love my Nikon CoolPix. Christmas present. The reason my husband chose it is because my sister bought one each for her 14 yr old twins last fall. She is not a tech but has taken some beautiful pictures with it when she can "borrow" it from her children.

It takes videos as well.

Enjoy!

We have gone through a couple of cameras because the batteries would die so quick, we thought something was wrong with the camera. Then someone asked if we had the kodak batteries. Apparently there are special batteries for digital cameras and it made all the difference! So whatever camera you get, invest the extra 20 bucks or so and get the camera batteries, the batteries last forever. I picked our batteries up at Target, it's not like you have to go to a special store.
