Dilemma! Overnight Belly Sleeper

Hello ladies!

I was just hoping to seek out some advice on a recently appreared issue I've been having with my oldest son who, though he's been fully trained during the day for quite some time, still has regular accidents at night. He's always been a belly sleeper, and does wear the nighttime pull ups each night. While we've been lucky to not have much trouble in dealing with this in the past thankfull the past few weeks/month have proved to be VERY difficult, with leaks becoming almost a nightly occurance.

The heart of the issue (I think!) is that I've noticed that in the mornings, his pull ups seem to be soaked towards the front, but almost entirely dry across the back! In essence, it seems like we're only getting *half* of the holding capacity of each pull ups. This is NOT good, as he still is having full on nighttime pees, despite us taking precautions (having him go before bed, trying to limit drinks just before bed, etc).

Does anyone have any experience/suggestion in dealing with this? We haven't tried a huge variety of pull ups, because truthfully the ones he's currently in have worked fine until just recently...although I have tried sizing up/down in his current brand. We also did try the 'Goodnites' underpants for a time, but found them to be too large to where gapping around his legs was an issue.

We've actually considered simply going back to a non-pull up diaper, in the hopes that it might be a little more absorbent towards the front/have more coverage, but I've been sort of uncertain over trying that, simply because of how long he's been using the pull ups at night (as opposed to diapers).

Thanks so much in advance! Any help is GREATLY appreciated!

What can I do next?

I have to second Lillym. I was having this issue with my son and I'd get him up right before I went to bed, hold on to him walking to the bathroom, put him on the potty tell him to go (he did) then walk him back to bed. I did this truthfully until he got too big for me to handle, but by then he had grown out of it. I always felt better going to bed knowing he was comfortable.

My son is now 6 and had a very rare accident a few nights ago. He said he was dreaming he had to go to the bathroom and he woke up wet. hehe. He cleaned it up himself by putting a towel over the wet spot and going back to bed. Didn't even tell me - I only found out in the morning. Boys!

Good luck!

Make sure he is aimed down in the pull up. Sometimes when boys pull the pull-up on, it aims them up and the urine goes right out the top.

If nothing else works try diaper liners or a super maxi pad in the front of the pull up. It might be enough to absorb the pee so it doesn't leak.

And yes make sure he is pointing down.

I actually had great luck with the "sleep walker pee". I would keep the lights off and right before I went to bed myself. .I would pick him up.carry him into the bathroom and help him pull them down.he would wake up just the slightest. Pee. And I would carry him back to bed. He would zone right out again and I bet he slept better for that slight interruption than wetting the pull up or bed. If he is a super light sleeper u might want to spend a few nights checking to see when he is deepest asleep or starting to come out of that rem and wake up more fully.

Go back to the non pull up diaper. It will save you the hassle, and ultimately, it doesn't really matter what he wears at night, as long as it's effective. Does it really matter whether he's wearing one type of absorbent pad thing vs. another, less effective pad thing? Pull ups really don't hold much urine. One day he will be fully capable of holding it through the night.

Sleeping children do not wake up and go pee. They wake up enough to clinch their muscles and hold the pee. They might let a little out but as soon as they go to sleep they'll relax and pee a ton.

Kids and adults are NOT supposed to wake up during the night to go pee. Do you seriously wake up several times per night only due to the urge to go pee? I think they worry that is a symptom of diabetes.

So he probably should not even be woken up. I found that did nothing for us except make a very tired and sleepy child.

I think you have to go up in size. But I wonder how old he is. If he's still young he is going to do this for a while so you do need to find a solution. Since you said put him back in diapers I am wondering if he's too young to be anything but soaking wet each morning. You did get OVERNIGHT pull ups right? AND ones for boys and not the ones for girls?

We had this issue in the past. While it certainly isn't fun, I assure that it does eventually seem to resolve itself!

One thing I'd like to add is, while I would be a bit wary about waking LO up, I would try and make things simple and accessible for him should he happen to wake up at some point and need to go. One such example would be putting nightlights in and around the bathroom to make things a bit easier and less daunting. If he isn't waking up yet or unable to hold it all night, that's alright too! Just be patient, and try and minimize the stress caused by what is ultimately a developmental thing, as opposed to something that can be taught.
