Do You Brine Your Turkey?

Hey All!

I'm just taking a poll to see who brine's their turkey. I didn't even know about brining until about 4 years ago and, before that, I really didn't care too much for turkey. I was the one who went to Thanksgiving dinner or made it and ate all the sides. I watched Alton Brown do it, decided to try it and was amazed at how tender, juicy and flavorful it was.

Here's my recipe, if you're interested.

2 quarts apple juice
1 lb brown sugar
1 cup kosher salt
3 quarts water
3 oranges, quartered
6 bay leaves
6 garlic cloves, crushed
2 lemons quartered

Directions:
1bring apple juice, lemons, oranges, sugar and salt to a boil over high heat, skim foam, let cool to room temperature.
2Add remaining ingredients.
3Brine turkey for 24 hours.
4Quantity is sufficient for a 14 pound turkey.

So, do you brine your turkey and has anyone ever brined it and then fried it?

Wow your recipe looks great. I will save it for next year.

As I type this my turkey is sitting in brine...not as great a recipe but I finally wrestled it into a brining bag and got it in the fridge. The first bag popped and sprayed brine all over my husband's new pants and on our wood floor. Needless to say I am anxiously awaiting 6:00 tonight when I will pour myself a nice glass of red wine ; )

Last year we dropped the turkey (in the brining bag, thank god), and it rolled across the garage floor. So yes, we brine, but we are not very good at it! There is always hope for next year I guess...I am not even considering taking it near a vat of hot oil until I get the brining down lol

Brine or several days of salting and marinading. Personally, I like my turkey to taste as turkish as possible so I don't add anything but salt (if brining then sugar as well).

This year is my first year cooking a turkey and I am brining it. I did follow Alton Brown's recipe except I left out the crystallized ginger. It was $10.99 at the grocery store!!!!!! I added some fresh sage, rosemary and thyme to my brine. My husbands uncle brines his turkey every year and says there is no other way to do it.

I have brined a turkey several times, but honestly, it's just too much work to find the extra frig space when I'm overloaded with all the other Thanksgiving food items being prepped.

And yes, just one year I brined it and fried it in a neighbors deep fryer. Everyone agreed it was THE BEST turkey EVER....but that still did not motivate me to do it again.

And, your recipe looks tasty!!
