Hi, I want to buy a dollhouse for my 20 mo. year old daughter, but I am not sure which brand and type is best. Any recommendations? Thanks!

Last year for christmas, we gave our 2 year old the Dora Enchanged Castle. She loves Dora, so it was great. We added the furniture kit, and she loves arranging the rooms, playing with the dolls. THe furniture opens and closes when Dora waves her magic wand. She still plays with it. All the pieces were large, studry plastic.
She also has a musical table that she loves. It teaches colors, counting, and is in english or spanish.

Merry Christmas. Have fun shopping.

When my oldest daughter turned two we gave her the fisher price my first dollhouse -- and she LOVED it. She STILL loves it, actually. The dollhouse comes with mom, dad and baby but we also go her the extra furniture that had the sister and grandma.

My other daughter is now 21 months and has been playing with this dollhouse for several months now and also loves it. This was one of the best gifts we managed to find for our little one.

Fisher price also makes another much larger dollhouse called the "loving family" dollhouses. This dollhouse is bigger with many more add-on pieces. It is more appropriate for the three/four year old set. I found one at a consignment shop for about fifteen bucks and have been using the "my first dollhouse" pieces interchangeably with the pieces that the consignment shop sold to me for the dollhouse. I have found that both my little ones (3 and 21 mo) prefer the my first dollhouse pieces and characters.

Also -- the fisher price snap and style dolls are a wonderful gift for a 2-3 year old b/c they can actually pull on and off the outfits. My two LOVE them

I absolutely love the "deluxe dream house" with 53 pcspiece furniture. Very modern 3 floors modern house, lots of fun.there is also a family sold separately, very nice. My daughter has it since her 2nd bday, she is 4 and she still loves it. all of her friends visiting always ask to play with the dollhouse. Great investment, worth every penny. It looks like an art piece not a doll house. Www.captoy.com

I agree with the Fisher Price for that age. We have both the Fisher Price and an elaborate wooden one. Each room you by extra for the wooden one is at least $20 whereas for the Fisher price it could be around $10-15. The Fisher Price dollhouse in our house has gotten way more use - more friendly for little kids and more interesting with the sounds and colors.

For a 20 month old, Fisher Price makes a very nice dollhouse that can be washed easily. Pieces are appropriate for a toddler's hands and mouth (in case of ingestion), are indestructible, and it has lots of nice furniture. They have a "My First Dollhouse" and the "Loving Family House"...both are nice (Loving Family is MUCH bigger and would last your daughter through preschool). Playmobile also makes a nice house that can be taken places...its called, "Take Along Dollhouse" which is nice to have that option with toddlers as they like to bring their houses with them places. Its easy to move around with, with nice classic Playmobile people and furniture.

There are some amazing wooden houses that are beautifully made...they are also much more expensive. If you're looking for one of those, the Melissa and Doug Company sets have lasted at our school for a nice long time and aren't too expensive. Their pieces are classic, the house is very simple and constructed nicely. I do notice that my daughter and the children in my preschool class were more drawn to the Fisher Price set as it has more "realistic" pieces and furniture, so I guess you have to decide what you're looking for. If your daughter is really into dolls, she will move into the Barbie scene or classic Victorian Sets very soon and the first little set you buy will be destined for the basement, sadly, like it did in our house.

Hope that helps!
Jen

I have 2 girls who are too old for this idea now but I know would have loved it at your daughters age. Have you seen the Rose Petal cottage? It's big enough for your daughter to get in it and pretend play. It has a stove and pretend cupcakes and other interesting things like that. As for a doll house playschool would probably have a good one for your daughters age group. Good luck!

I noticed in your section about yourself you mention that finding activities to do at home is difficult. Have you thought about building your own dollhouse? They have great sets at craft stores. It's something I've always wanted to do, but don't have time. Then you can create exactly what you want and you get the opportunity to be inventive. Just a thought.
