We are lucky we were only without power & heat for 6 days - but there are so many not as lucky that have lost everything.
I contacted the redcross to donate clothes but they only want money - In bergen County where can we donate clothes that will actually go to the people affected by Sandy?

What can I do next?

that would bug me that they ONLY want money.

I would contact a church in the area or other type of community center - like the shelters where those most affected by this storm have gone - who had ot leave with little - or what was on their backs - give there. You KNOW the people will need it.

I'm glad you got your heat and electricity back!!

Contact the Salvation Army, local churches, homeless shelters, domestic violence shelters and other charities.

They may not go to Sandy victims but they will go to people in need.

I think the reason they are asking for money is because they don't have the facilities or manpower to deal with managing and distributing the "stuff" that people want to donate.
And let's face it, a lot of people donate junk.
I am NOT saying your stuff is junk, I'm sure it's not!
But can you see how in an imminent emergency such as this, where people have lost their homes and/or everything they own, the most pressing priority is to get them housing, medical attention and food, all of which cost money?
If you really want to donate your clothes directly to the victims, perhaps you can offer it up on craigslist, or freecycle. Or even better, take it to LOCAL organizations that distribute food and/or clothing directly to the poor.

Your best bet--find a church group actually going to the site to help with repair/rebuild. They may have room, they may not.
While its sweet to want to send "things" to those in need, it's incredibly inefficient to match those types of goods to recipients.
That's why disaster organizations, who have done this thousands if times, request funds and blood donations.
If you don't have much in the way of funds, maybe you could do a neighborhood collection and donate the total to the Red Cross?

Call the YJCC on Pascack Rd in Washington Twp. They had a collection last week. You can also go and warm up and use their shower facilities, if you need to.

I hope your power comes back on shortly.

Try looking up your local community centers. Often, the same building as the food bank also takes donations.
