Hello!
We have a queen size down comforter that I would like to wash before winter comes- that should be dry cleaned. Has anyone ever attempted washing one of these at home? We have a front load washer, it would fit...Im just afraid all the feathers will be in 1 big lump or something crazy like that!
Thanks for your 2 cents ;)

What can I do next?

J.,
I have washed my down comforter in my front loading washing machine on gentle cycle and then dried it in the dryer with 4 or 5 tennis balls to re-fluff up the down feathers.

When I don't need to wash my down comforters, I will also air them outside in bright sunshine and wind to blow the stale smell away.

I have not had a problem with feathers in the washing machine or clumping feathers once the comforter was completely dried in the dryer.

I have washer both my down comforters in a front loading washer and they were fine. I thought they smelled like a wet animal when they were wet but that goes away.

Go to the store and buy a dryel kit. It comes with everythng you need to take care of things needing to be dry cleaned and then you wont need to worry about the feathers. You just use your dryer

my mom used to wash ours all the time. She learned the tennis ball trick..there also some thing called dryer balls that work well, otherwise you will get that ball of feathers!

wash, wash, wash away. Yes they will be in clumps when you wash them but the trick is finished in the dryer. You need clean two or three tennis balls in the dryer as well. This will put your comforter back to shape and fluff out those feathers. Very rarely do the feathers fall out- so don't worry about it.
*wash alone and dry alone.

It'll be good as new.

wash it on the gentle cycle. i do not know if you can do this in the washer but in the dryer if you can dry it put a shoe in the dryer. it will bang around with the comforter and hopefully help keep it from getting into a big lump. i remember learning this from my mom.

I also washed mine in my washer and it was a HUGE MISTAKE!!! When i took it out of the dryer the feathers were sticking out of it. The dry cleaner guy said it was because it needs to be dry cleaned, it also stated that on the tag LOL!!! I again just didn't follow directions, we always want to do things that we think are the easy way. Well in the long run i had to put out MORE money to buy another one, whenit would have cost less to dry clean it. I suggest you just take it to the cleaners.

I would get it dry cleaned. It's like washing down pillows...the feathers get soaking wet and when you go to dry it, it will ball up and smell funny. Feathers just aren't meant to be washed. Plus, not hygenic. Dry cleaning will guarantee that the bacteria will be removed because of the steam process.

When I was growing up my brother had a down sleeping bag that he had washed. I remember him having a special laundry detergent for down and putting tennis balls in the dryer to keep the feathers from clumping.

Hiya, Ours comes out GREAT in the wash.

we have a king size comforter and we paid a bit for it, so it first I "babied" it by going to the dry cleaners--then I realised that 1. we could buy a new on for every 5-6 trips to clean it, and 2. i didn;t want dry cleaner chemicals next to us when we slept.

I tried washing it and IT TURNED OUT GREAT! I wash it now every month and yes it is a but less full, but it is also a lot cleaner (and 6 yrs old).

wash away. it will be fine.

J. - I have a king down comforter that I get dry cleaned once a year, unless something spills on it & I need to get it done more often. I would not recommend washing it at home, I have learned that those tags state a certain type of cleaning for a reason. The cost for my King is approx. $38. Good luck with what you decide.

Hi J., I wash my king down and full down in my front load washer ( use extra rinse cycle) and put it in dryer with 3 tennis balls. I use a couple cycles of drying; towards the end use the fluff cycle. Good Luck!

I have washed ours many times without a problem. I add Downey to the wash and use lots of dryer sheets...wet feathers smell terrible! I have a front load washer as well. I do find it necessary to pull it out of the dryer a couple of times to shake it out and "unbunch" it so it will dry evenly. We have both king and queen-sized.
