I have a 28 month old son. He has horrible allergies that we treat. The last time he saw his Dr. she said he has very hard ear wax. For a while now, he has been cupping both ears. I have been seeing if it is only when certain things happen (like when we turn music on) but I don't see a pattern, even though he does do it when music is turned on but not only then. Should I take him in?

I always say better safe than sorry when it comes to going to the Dr.. you could try using a bulb syringe with warm distilled water, squirting (not hard, light suqirts) the water into the ear to loosen the wax, repete this several times. If the water alone does not work, try liquid colace. It is typically used as a laxative, but the oils will losen the ear wax; my oldest daughter had this done when she had a large wax build up. The Doc. recomended I do this once a week. These are only suggestions, I fully recomend you speak with your childs Doctor. Recurrent ear infections can be serious. My oldest daughter ended up needing ear tubes from the recurrent infections. I now wear hearing aids, because of severe hearing loss in my middle ears due to untreated ear infections when I was a child.

About once a month, my mother used to lay us over her lap on a towel. Our heads would lay sideways with one ear pointing up. She'd pour in a dilute mixture of warm water + hydrogen peroxide. It would bubble and tickle - - so we'd giggle - - and all kinds of crud would float up and out of the ear canal. She'd stick a cotton ball in after about 1 minute. Then flip us over and do the other ear. We liked it. I do not know where she learned to do this. I do remember having severe ear aches around age 3. But after she started the Hydrogen Peroxide Ear Bubbling ritual, I never had another ear ache. Better ask a doc, before you try this at home. I have still have excellent hearing at age 51, so it did no damage to ear drum.

If he is suffering from chronic ear infections as well, it may be time to insert the tubes. My daughter had to get them when she was 2 and I had no idea how much those infections actually affected her hearing, but they did. Not a week after she got them put in, she pronouncing things she hadn't done correctly before. After a while, they fell out, never found them they're so small, but has been fine since as far as ear infections.
I would take him in just in case, and if this isn't the answer, I sure hope you find one! Good luck.

Hard ear wax might be uncomfortable, but it is not usually the culprit of an earache. Ear infections are usually what cause earaches. An untended ear infection can cause a lot of pain for some and hardly any for others. If your son is holding his ears, he probably has an ear infection in both ears from the allergies. Ear infections happen in the part of the ear between the ear drum and the cochlea (inner ear) and is called otitis media. I suggest a urgent care or immediate appt with your pediatrician. In the mean time a little pediatric benadryl might help the allergy symptoms and the pain.

Definitely take him in, if the wax is hard, then your doctor should be given you some drops to soften the wax and it's easy for remove. Also ask your doctor about getting your sons ears syringed. All they do is put like a small hose in your ear and squirt luke warm water in your ear which also loosens the wax. I only know this as a couple of months ago I became all dizzy and I lost my balance, blah, blah, and when I went to my doctor there was a buildup of wax in my ear, now I am talking about an adult here, imagine if that is what is happening to your son!!! Get your doctor to recommend you to a specialist? Try and catch this now while your son is little and before he starts school. Good luck and let us know how you got on.

My son suffers with hard ear wax too. My Doc told us to put a couple drops of body temp mineral oil in his ears at night with a cotton ball. The mineral oil will soften it up and the cotton ball will help draw the wax out of his ear. It helped alot with our little guy. His ears did bother him, they didn't hurt so much as irritate and itch. The doc also told us that this is very common. After a couple of weeks we were able to get the wax loosened up enough that our doctor was able to dig out the chunk of wax with a super soft bendy thing **** DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME*** My son is 4 yrs though so he was able to sit for that. Your doctor may try to irrigate first before sticking objects in. I also found that cotton swabs did little to help because you are not supposed to actually put them into the ear. My son's wax was so bad that it actually blocked his whole ear canal but the mineral oil unblocked more than half the canal in 2 weeks and then the doctor was able to get the remaining bits out.
I think what you are posting sounds just like what my little guy was doing. Could be infected but if he is not fevered or showing other signs of infections and you know that he has a wax problem, you may just want to watch it for a bit. The mineral oil really works well. Good luck.
