My 13 month old has her second ear infection in just over 2 weeks. Prior to these two instances, she was a perfectly healthy baby, no illness besides the minor cold that seemed to bring on the first ear infection. She just finished a round of Amoxil on the 5th, and we went back today, only to discover the other ear is now infected and again she's been prescribed antibiotics ( a new one) and the doctor made a referral to a ear, nose & throat specialist. What causes ear infections? She is still nursing, the dr said that should provide some prevention to ear infections, but yet she has one. (my two older girls had them & other minor illnesses frequently as babies, but Chelsea has had none of those issues so far) any insight as to what could be causing them? She still has a pacifier, but only to fall asleep, no allergies so far (that we are aware of), no bottles in her crib... what else can bring them on? The doctor didnt have much to say, besides that she has a build up of ear wax...

What can I do next?

When you get a cold and become congested it is supposed to drain through the sinuses , but sometimes these can become blocked and cause and infection , sometimes it will be a sinus infection , ear infection or chest infection , it's just one of those things that most people have had at some point. The ped has referred you to an ENT just to make sure all ok , but chances are that it is just the first course of antibiotics didn't quite clear the infection and after this second course all will be fine.

My DD is 3.5 yo and just had her first (and so far only, thank goodness) ear infection a few weeks ago. It happened in conjunction with having a cold. Sniffles and coughs often lead to ear infections, since they are all connected.

Interestingly, she was NOT breastfed beyond 2 weeks old. I had to go on medication for blood clots and had no choice but to put her on formula.

ear infections are caused by the lack of draining in your babys ears..usually from congestion or cold. Your baby must not have responded to the first set of medication and that is why your baby is on another kind of antibiotics..usually it goes Amoxicillian and then Omnicef is stronger. The ENT is just going to do a double check since that is their specialty..dont worry..by 13 months my daughter had already had about 8 ear infections and one ear tube surgery...she is having her second one this thursday...all will be ok..its nothing big

Often times a babies/childs ear can have fluid in it when they are teething. This usually is only temporary. You want to make sure that the doctor doesnt give you antibiotics for fluid unless there is other signs of infection, such as redness, swelling or fever. For some children fluid can come and go throughout their childhood with no connection to infection.
If the fluid continues ear tubes would be a good idea to keep learning going. Hope this helps.

you can put garlic and mullien oil in baby's ears, it helps it to drain and the garlic is a natural anti-bacterial. works for us.

if you do go the antibiotic route, be sure to feed her yogurt with active cultures. the antibiotics wipe out all the good bacteria too and yogurt helps restore it so she doesn't get yeast infections.

cold air and wind in her ears, allergies, swimming or other activities that get water in her ears. Put a hood on her head everytime you leave the house. I t could be simple teething too. Teething causes runny noses and runny noses will play back and forth between the nose and ears. It is just a part of being a toddler or baby.
