Ear Infections - Chicago,IL

I have absolutely no experience with an ear infection. My husband is currently at a Walgreens clinic waiting to have my daughter seen. We have all had colds over the past week, with my little one and I getting hit on Thursday/Friday this past weekend. My older kids are pretty much over theirs, just one has a sore, stuffed up nose still. Anyway, my little one who will be 3 later this month has not really eaten much since Sunday morning (when I though she was feeling better as she ate 2 waffles and a part of an apple) but is drinking a LOT of water. She will not let us touch her ear, though does not complain if I touch her ear lobe-just the closer part. Also she says it hurts and has some discharge that could be wax, can't say since I have no clue the difference. Her ear is not red though at all. Does it sound like it could be an infection? I looked on line and it said a bad cold could also cause ear aches from a virus. She is miserable and you can tell she has lost a little weight in her face. Her fever comes and goes but was never higher than 101 one time otherwise around 100.3 or lower. How long does it take to clear an ear infection and how long till your child felt at least a little better?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, they just finished. She has an ear infection. And a throat inflammation. Since the pressure from her throat had no where to go, it went to her ears. And he thought she bit her lip but the pressure caused a slight nose bleed. We have meds for her ears and her throat. Plus it looks like she has lost 3 or 4 pounds. Daddy wants to wait until I get home to give her meds but smartly decided he will do it as soon as they get home. Also going to try to get her to eat something. The great thing is she has been drinking a lot of water so she is not dehydrated.

My husband took her to the Walgreens clinic because we could not get into our docs office until Thursday at the earliest, even though she is complaining it hurts. that is why we decided to go to the "Take Care Clinic" or whatever it is called. The woman is a registered nurse and said that if we still see any discharge after a few days or she still does not feel good to take her back.

awh poor baby, it sounds linke an inner ear infection, antibiotics and hopfully the pain will subside with in 3 days.

The way a baby's ear cannal is angled is that any sinus build up it flows into the ear cannal, bad design I know but there must be a reason for it ( I don't get it but...)

So happy to hear you got baby looked at, you are on the road to recovery then. Good Luck.

sounds like an infection but without a doc seeing her you dont know. An infection will NOT go away without antibiotics. My baby is 2 and in her short life so far she has had over 20 of them...she is about to get her second set of ear tubes to help with the draining. You will not see anyting visable with ear infections as its inside and a doc sees it with one of those ear scopes. once your baby gets prescribe the antibiotics, you will probably have to give 1 tspn per day. you should see an improvement within the first 24-48 hours. however you need to give the script for about 10 days (which gets old...espeically for me since my baby has had so many of them.) cheer up, your little one will probably start getting better by this evening. just give her some Tylenol today and Motrin before bedtime to help with the pain.

Sounds like an ear infection...Glad she is being seen. Have her take the antibiotics if given a prescription so she will feel better. Use a probiotic like Florastor Kids in tandem so no "tummy upset"...I hope she feels better. Poor thing! No fun :(

You've never delt with an ear infection before?? YOU LUCKY MAMA!!! Yeah, it does sound like on. Antibiotics, lots of easy eating food. My son only likes applesauce when he has an ear infection, get a probiotic for after the antibiotics are done. . .or lots of yogurt. I like the Tilamook brand because it doesn't have any added sugar, no hormones, and it tastes sooo good!

my son was constantly on antibiotics for ear infections but make sure they actually see fluid in here ear and not just the redness that can be caused by a cold and she does not need antibiotics for that. I am on the fence since I am not a medical doctor I can simply suggest you make sure they see fluid before going with an antibiotic.

Sounds like an ear infection to me. They will give her an antibiotic and hopefully within 24 hrs or less she will be feeling MUCH better. My kids have had more ear infections than I care to count (one ended up with tubes in her ears). They are in pain when they have them. Give her tylonol and motrin...switch off every 4-hours. Hopefully she will be back to her old self soon!!!

all three of mine have had this. my oldest first. i didnt think the lil boys would too get ear infections. my oldest has never had one. i took both lil boy to doc yesterday and it was double. i would not give meds for fever untill its 101 something. Thats our rule here. Sounds like it could be full blown infection. my boys i knew it was bad because they had stuff oozing from their eyes. which turns out it was bc they also had sinus infections. i had no clue a lil kiddo could get one. as long as she is drinking fluids, she should be ok. maybe try to sneek just chicken broth into a sippy and see if she will take it just for the calories. we are on meds here for ten days now. i am not one to go the anitbotic route but when it is coming out their eyes i gotta.

good luck hang in there. they will if on meds start showing signs after one dose they feel a little better.
