i remember asking for mine when I was entering 2nd grade. I won't consider getting my daughters' ears pierced until they are old enough to ask for & earn it. Not to mention responsible enough to care for them properly themselves. It's their body, I feel it should be their choice.

I would contemplate NOT...

Here's what I have seen my whole life from grown women with crooked holes in their ears....they always blame it on having been pierced when they were infants.

As the body grows, the skin stretches and what the center of the ear is now is NOT what she will have later...

I think it pushes them to look too grown up too soon. I would rather they get to make the decision when a bit older and use it as a reward for something special like finishing 1st grade or learning to ride a 2 wheeler. I had mine done when I was 40. My daughter had hers done when she was 5. I just think its not something a tiny baby needs and when I see them pierced on an infant I wonder what else the parents are going to allow or push her to do at a really young age.

I think babies with pierced ears is so tacky! I would never alter my child's body without their permission. She is not your property. I have 3 daughters. They do not get their ears pierced until they are old enough to ask for it. We then make it a girl's day out complete with lunch and shopping. I have done this with 2 of them so far. They felt so special and grown up. Kids already grow up too fast. Wait and make this a special day for her when she is older.

IMHO you should wait until she is old enough to ask for it. My wife has never had her ears pierced and I'm very happy with her decision.

Good luck to you and yours.

If you get them done young there is the chance of skin growing over the backing of the earrings. As the ear grows you may find the hole being nowhere near where it needs to be as they get older and have to have it redone to be centered again. There is just so much growth going on in those early years!
Dr Sears recommends not having it done until 8 years old.
I had my first piercing at 9 years old and my second at 16 years. I was old enough to take care of them and understand the responsibility and there was enough growth that the holes are where they looks nice still now.
I'm waiting until my daughter is older personally.

let it be her choice. I waited until I was a teenager. My daughter is 10 and is adamant that she will never get hers pierced ( time will tell)

this gets mentioned periodically on here. i have to say i am absolutely against it (it is THEIR body, not yours!) and i have friends who have pierced their beautiful little girls' ears (are they not beautiful enough?), so i won't get into it any more than that. i completely think it's wrong, since you asked our opinions. but to each their own i suppose.

I'd wait till theyre older. My granddaughter who is 17 is a piercer at a parlor, and she told me that the trauma that the piercing guns cause is very bad, and they have no way of cleaning those guns. Plus, up untill she was stretching her ears, her left one was crooked because the girl didn't know what she was doing. She says a needle is much much more sanitary, and less traumatic. She said a few weeks ago she had to drain fluid out of a 16 year old's new pierced ears cause she bought a gun and it got infected, had puss and blood. Shes pierced most of her ear, and she said that it even hurts less with needles

I would wait until she was old enough to ask for it. I understand the reasons for doing it so young, but it seems so cruel IMO to hold a baby down and deliberately hurt it for the sake of convenience and fashion. I was 13 when I got mine done and it was a fight to get dad to agree to it.
On the other hand, my 2 year old daughter just got hers done because she asked for it even after watching someone else get their's done. She knew it would hurt and sometimes it was a fight to clean them, but I personally feel better knowing it was her choice. She wanted them so bad she was even willing to sit there and let them pierce one ear at a time.
Whatever you decide I would suggest you go somewhere that can do both ears at the exact same time, so you do not have to fight her twice.

I chose to have me ears pierced at 6yrs old, turns out I'm allergic to most metals. I was able to wear solid gold earrings until my teens, then for some reason I became allergic to those too. I can't wear earrings for longer than an hour, or my entire ear swells up, gets red, and it HOT to the touch. For this reason I refuse to pierce my daughters ears at all, if she chooses to do it when she is an adult and risk the allergy that's up to her. I wouldn't pierce a baby's ears for this reason, you never know who is going to be allergic, and why risk putting your young baby through that pain?

Sorry, but no way would I pierce my daughters ears. First off, I wouldn't want to put her in that much pain just for cosmetic reasons. Second, I am a worrier, I would constantly be afraid that they would come out while she was sleeping and might swallow part of it. I know that sounds funny, but I actually know someone who's six month old did that very thing.

I did both my older daughter's ears around 7 months and have no regrets. They were too small to even notice that anything happened and did not play with them at all; cleaning was a breeze and just part of the diaper changing for a few weeks. I numbed their ears with emla cream and neither of them even cried. They are now 4.5 and 3 and LOVE their earings :o)

I think you either have to do them when babies are still small (under 10 months) or wait till they're old enough to actually take care of their ears themselves - closer to 12 years for most kids.

I would do it! They dont mess with the earrings when they are so young and they tend to get infected less. And if she decides she doesnt want earrings when she is older, she can take them out!

barbaric! I can't stand pierced ears in babies. For who's vanity? not theirs! Studs are not comfortable to sleep in. I know this is perfectly acceptable in some cultures and some people. I've tried to be less judgmental on this topic, but every time I see babies with pierced ears is burns me up inside.

I got my daughters done when she was 6 months. Her doctor was okay with it as long as she had one set of shots done already.

Check with your pediatrician to see if they're insured to do it in the office. They'll do it as soon as your daughter has the appropriate vaccinations if they're insured to do it, or they'll give you a form stating that she's had the vaccinations and can refer you to a pediatrician or nurse practitioner who'll do it and is licensed and insured.

The best time to do it is at 3 months or when they have the tetanous shot. Ask your pediatritian, ours have this service in office....( don't wait to much because they can reach they ears and try to take them off or if you wait until older they may be afraid to do it).

Check with your state guidelines first to make sure she is old enough if you haven't already. Each state is different as to the requirements of ear piercing. My daughter was 6 months old when I got hers done per Indiana guidelines and she did fine. What they did was had both guns loaded and the lady did one side and then she quickly did the other side. Don't let them do both sides at the same time because if she were to turn her head suddenly, it could tear her earlobes. Changing/cleaning them will be easier while she is sleeping as well.

My daughter is almost 11yrs old and she loves wearing earing. We also learned she has a nickel allergy too from them and have to make sure her earrings are nickel free along with the rest of her jewelry.

Good luck

I decided to have earings when I was a teenager. And now, i regret having them because I am no longer into it. When I see a baby girl with earings, I have this fear that she might scratch her skin or be poked by something sharp. I love giving kisses to babies, and I do not have to watch what I do in fear of hurting them.

What if she is not into that when she grows older? I think you should give her that choice. That's just my opinion.

Do it! You need to wait 2 weeks after her 2 month shots, otherwise she can get lock jaw.I got my daughter's done at 2.5 months and I would do it that way again!it was so much easier to clean and she wasn't old enough to mess with them and risk infection. She didn't cry very long when they pierced them and doesn't even remember it.She loves having her ears pierced and always has.And when she gets to the age to decide rather she wants pierced ears or not she has the choice to not wear earrings anymore but I doubt that will happen.

I would think it should be her choice. Not everyone wants their ears pierced after all. For my daughter, I'm waiting until she can decide (she's nearly 4). I had my first holes done when I was 6 and my second when I was 12 and my third when I was 18. But I want it to be up to her if she wants any piercings.

Good luck!

Lots of people do it. Personally, earrings on a young child seems like a hassle to me. She might leave them alone now, but what about when she gets a little bit older? I'd wait until the maturity to leave them alone is there.

Totally up to you. As you can see, there are many people who are very against it, which actually surprises me. I never realized there were people so strongly against it. I was three months old when my mom had mine pierced, and I was fine. I always liked my earrings, never had a problem with them. But with my daughter, I decided to wait until she was five because I was worried that she would mess with them when she was a baby (although, really it's because I didn't feel like messing with earrings on my baby, I already had too much to worry about :-). If you decide to do it, you should ask your baby's pediatrician about the best time to do it and where you can go to have it done (I think my mom had mine done at the pediatrician's office, but that was 29 years ago so I don't know if they would still do that).

I think the younger the better! They wont even know its happening, and they wont ever remember and they are still young so they wont pull or tug at them. So much easier when they are young. Then she can wear cute little studs! I find it very adorable. I had my ears pierced the day I was born, and I still love them now, and I will do it for my daughter too and if she decides later on she doesnt like them then she doesnt have to keep them. But who wouldnt? Lol.

I had mine done when I was a few months old and I was fine. My mom said I didn't really cry too long and I have a cousin that got hers at age 6 and she was terrified. I say get it over with. She's too little to realize that it's a needle, therefore it won't scare her as much as if you wait.
