Early Fetal Movement and Colostrum Production!

My past few periods have taken me aback. I felt certain I was pregnant, but bled a light, but convincing 3 days, so I conceded that I wasn't. I also took a few pregnancy tests, all negative. Now this month my period is late by a few days, and for the past week I can swear I feel fluttering in my abdomen. I dismissed it at first as gas, but it has continued to happen in the patterns that my first did, at night when I've settled down. And the sensations are EXACTLY the same. It's uncanny. Today my breasts felt heavy and when I sqeezed my right nipple, colostrum came out! If I am pregnant, I would assume I would only be a few weeks, but these symptoms seem WAY to early if that is the case. My husband is bringing me a home test today, and no matter what, I'll set up an appointment to check it out, but I am stumped on this one. I feel bad because when I thought I wasn't pregnant, I lived life as usual-a few beers here and there, maybe even a shot of tequila now and then (not in excess though, I'm a fairly moderate person). Anybody have it turn out they were pregnant for way longer than they thought? Ideas, anyone?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, to my disapointment I started bleeding this morning. Still light so far, but my hopes are now officially dashed. I had convinced myself that I was pregnant (my imagination even led me to twins!), and now I'm just a cranky chick on her period. Oh well, I guess when it's meant to be it will be. I will still make an appointment though, with my doctor, to talk about all this and run some tests. Thanks so much for all of your insight. I appreciate it.

K.,

When I found out that I was pregnant I was 6 weeks and could have swore that I was at the most 2 to 3 weeks because I had my period the month before and I was like clock work. I had drank 3 glasses of wine, which is excessive for me, and did not know that I was pregnant. In addition, I had taken Naproxen while pregnant and again had no clue. I just gave birth to a beautiful and healthy baby girl. So if you are pregnant you will be fine. Good luck!

You could have a pituitary tumor...sounds more dramatic than it actually is. There's something called a microadenoma that pushes on the pituitary gland. The gland then secretes prolactin which would cause the things you're describing. It's easily fixed (medication, no surgery). I would go to the doctor and ask for an HCG level (that's the pregnancy hormone) and a prolactin level. If you feel 'quickening' which is the term for feeling a baby move, you would be positive on a home test, but just to be on the safe side... If the prolactin level is elevated and the HCG isn't...then it's time for the medication to supress the microadenoma. Hope this helps.

When my son was 2 as well, I had the same symptoms! Colostrum and tenderness... I thought I had to be pregnant. I wasn't. I would use a pregnancy test once a month to make sure!

Hi K.,
The only thing I can say is don't worry about the few drinks that you had early on. I am pregnant now. I am due in April. I didn't know I was pregnant even though I had missed two periods. This was due to the fact that I had gone to the hospital and they had given me a pregnancy test and it came back negative. So, they took x-rays and I lived life the same. Then when I was still not having a period after the third month( I think) I went to my regular doctor and found out I was! I had had an x-ray of my chest, and over the course of time about 2-3 glasses of wine and a margurita(sp?). I am also a moderate person. I spoke to my ob about what had happened and to others in the med. field. They said not to worry about it and all my tests came back looking good. So, try not to worry too much, if you can help it. They baby is probably fine.
I hope this makes sense and it helps some.

Hi K.
Well these certainly sound like symptoms, but everybody is different. What stumps me is the colostrum! First off, don't feel bad about having a few drinks. Most of us have probably done that and our little ones turned out ok. You could be a month or longer pregnant and not know it. As a responsible mom you know you wouldn't harm your fetus if you knew you were pregnant. I'm sure most of our moms drank when they were pregnant with us! Focus on the present and future. Take your prego test and find out for sure. I would say if that was negative, I would go see the OB and get a blood test to find out for sure, especially since your having physical symptoms. Good luck!

Sounds like you will find out for sure as soon as possible. You sound like an intelligent woman, so Im sure you will be on top of things. I know a woman who didnt know she was pregnant until she was 5 months along. Dont worry about a few drinks. We all do that before we know anything. Its the repeated offenders that flirt with disaster. Good luck

This never happened to me but my sister-in-law couldn't take the home pregnancy tests only blood tests determined her pregnancy and the first blood test was always wrong. It wasn't until she was further along (like the 3rd month) that the blood test would show up that she was pregnant. Just see what your doctor says. Good Luck!

I hope you were able to find out if you are pregnant or not. Negative pregnancy tests don't always mean you are not pregnant as the negative are not as fool proof as the positive results are. You can also bleed during your period time. I thought I was not pregnant because I have having some brown discharge like at the beginnning and end of my period and the tests were negative. A week later they were positive and I am now 26 weeks. For sure see a doctor and find out and take your vitamins. :) I doubt the alchohol hurt the baby a little bit I have heard doesn't do much especially that early.

Anything in moderation you are okay. I hope you are taking prenatal pills though as it sounds like you may be trying to get pregnant. As for the test, they sometimes don't pick up the hormone. If they say you are pregnant it is 100% true b/c it sensed the pregnant hormone, but if it comes negative that is when it may not be right. It means it didn't sense the hormone... doesn't mean the hormone isn't there.

Hope that helps! Good luck :) How exciting!

I did that several times. I guess it was me hoping that I didn't turn up pregnant because my x was so abusive and I was already wanting out. I was sexually (raped) by my x over and over and had no choice in the matter. He was controlling and it never failed that everytime I wanted out I ended up pregnant. So there were many times that I was afraid that I was and I felt the fluttering also. Turned out it was muscle spasms and I could feel them more when I was in a relaxation mode.
I don't know your situation but maybe you are having muscle spasms also making you think you are pregnant.

Being able to squeeze fluid out of your nipple does not in itself mean your pregnant. My best friend could do this in college (particularly close to her period), long before she was ever pregnant or had had any kids. I felt "the baby moving" long after I had my second son. I wasn't pregnant so I assume they were muscle spasms. However, there are many medical conditions that can make your body think its pregnant, only one of which is actually being pregnant. If your periods are irregular and your body seems to be telling you your pregnant you should see a doctor.

This did happen to someone I know, she was about 5 months pregnant by the time her doctors realized she was pregnant (being treated for hypoglycemia). A blood test or ultrasound at the doctor's could confirm for you.

When I was first pregnant, the pregnancy test didn't come back positive until I was a week late, so it's possible that you really are pregnant, even if the test was negative. But unless the test was "broken" (perhaps out of date, or something), then you won't be several months pregnant, because the amount of hCG in your urine (what the pregnancy tests test for) remains high throughout pregnancy, and if you were 2-3 months along, you'd be sure to have a positive pregnancy test.

It's possible your uterus is sensitive enough to feel fetal movement early, but the typical 1st-time mom feels fetal movement around 18-20 weeks, and 2nd-time moms feel it a few weeks earlier. Fetuses don't begin to move until several weeks along, so it's extremely unlikely that you felt actual fetal movement. I've had sensations like you describe several times when I wasn't pregnant -- I had regular, normal periods all throughout -- and it felt ***exactly*** like early fetal movement. But it must have been gas, because I know for certain that I was not pregnant, and definitely not 2-3 months along!
