Hi again Moms~
First of all let me say that you guys are great! Such great advice in a wonderful forum...Thanks!

Okay, on to the question. My boys have lots of ear wax (eww), so much that I have to irrigate their ears to get it out. My 3yr old can use Debrox but the baby is too young for it. Alcohol and Peroxide are too drying so per Dr. I used baby oil to soften it. Surprise...he's allergic to it! He woke up with bright red ears and a rash where the oil had touched. He's fine, hydrocortisone cleared up the itching but now I am out of ideas. I know that ear wax is nature's way of protecting ears, but my guys get so much it affects their hearing (again...eww)! Anybody with me? If so, what are you doing that helps?
Thanks TONS!
~L.

So What Happened?

Well, first of all thanks for all the responses! Like I said, you guys rock! While I dont think I will be trying to get my baby to sit still for a candle (lol) I am going to try some other oils. It seems like a big 'duh' that I wouldn't think to try something a little more natural first. I guess sometimes we need somebody else to point out the obvious, so thanks for doing that!

Ear wax is usually the body's response to something foreign being in the ear and due to a dryness. It could also be an interruption to the nerve flow to the cells that produce the wax. Have you ever thought of taking the kids to see a Chiropractor? I know it sounds strange, but it could be something that simple. I know it helped me out a lot as a child with some of those similar problems. My dad also used to put sweet oil in my ears, which helps to lubricate the ear canal. It can be found in most natural food stores. I actually found a website that sold it (an ear candeling website) somewhere, but I will have to check out where I saw it because I can't remember off the top of my head. You can find a Chiropractor near you who works on children at www.icpa4kids.com or if you are in or near Clarkston, MI you can give my office a call at ###-###-#### and I will see what I can do for you. Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Hi L. -

I have also heard about the candle that you light to draw out the wax. I have not tried it either, but know some people who swaer by ut as well. I would say try it on yourself first, just because I don't know how it feels or works or anything!

I think you can find it health food stores. You may have to call around. Sorry, I don't know the exact name, but I know they are ear wax candles. My friend has used them, but she us not sure about use for infants.....

Good luck!

I don't know if he's too young for this or not, but when I was a kid my ears didn't "expel" the wax like most did so my mom would take some warm water in one of those nose sucky things (I can't for the life of me remember what they are called right now!) and gently squirt it in there to soften it up before trying to remove it. Just an idea! Good luck!

My kids have the same problem and it's became a bigger problem when my 2 1/2 (then) had an ear infection and they couldn't see around the wax in her ear. Our doctor told us that any kind of oil (not motor oil) was fine to use. She told us to put a few drops in 1-2 times a month. So far it has seemed to help. We normal use olive oil, we have also started doing it with our 1 year old twins as well....just so we don't have any more problems with wax!

My 12 year old has the same problem(it runs in the family). I use sweet oil for her, I know you said he is allergic to the baby oil so I dont know how he will react to the sweet oil. But it works and is seems to be very gentle. I ussually warm it up slightly. I hope you find something that works.
God Bless,
A.

You may want to try sweet Almond Oil as opposed to the over scented mineral oil baby oil. :-) Burts Bees makes a nice Almond Oil Baby Oil. Or you can just go to your local Health Food Store they should carry it.

Olive oil would work too.

And just a reminder the more you clean their ears, the more wax they will produce.

I have not used it but my best friend does all the time on her kids. But there is this candle thing you can buy that you stick in the ear and light one end.As it burns it sucks out the wax from the ear. After you have to put a cotton ball in the ear because it is so clean that it has to be protected for 24 hours..But she swaers by it..If you need to know where to get it and want to try it let me know.I will ask her...

I have not used the "ear candle" on my little ones, but have on myself numerous times. They work wonderfully. It takes about 10 minutes for one candle to burn, and I know that you can't get little ones to sit still for that long, but maybe a few minutes at a time will help. (HINT: Have a bowl of water next to you to put out the flame, you can't blow it out.) The biggest drawback I had from them was that the internal part of my ear itched for about a day, but nothing that I couldn't handle. Good luck!

Hi there. Ear candles are available at health food stores and at GNC. They are less expensive at health food stores, usually. Check with your Dr about using anything, as you don't want to remove too much wax. There is over the counter wax removal stuff available.
