I don't know if this is the issue or not but some kids get red ears with certain types of food. Some have phenol intolerance. Some have IgG sensitivies.
I have a 10yr son. When he goes to bed his stomach and ears get hot. He has to have the fan on him and sleep without a shirt to stay cool. It doesn't happen any other time of the day. I find it weird that when he lays down to go to sleep these symptoms appear. Does anyone know what could be causing these symptoms? He is not sick he does not run a fever. They are just symptoms that appear. He is perfectly healthy. That is what so puzzling about this.

People have different internal temps. My husband says that I have my own built in heater! Could be a puberty thing too.
Ask your doctor to check hormones
Is he eating something every evening or taking a particular supplement? I think niacin can cause "flushing."
I looked on the web briefly and saw that falling body temperature is supposed to correlate with/induce sleepiness. Maybe sending blood to the ears is your son's body's way of trying to help him cool down (that's a great place for heat to dissipate! My son has huge ears that get bright red when he needs a cooling off!) and so what you are doing is just the right thing to help him get on with the business of sleeping.
You live in FL -- I am wondering if you use cotton/poly sheets or 100% cotton -- perhaps a 100% cotton quilted pad and all cotton-bottom sheet can help, and if you have a foam mattress topper take it off -- if you are using a foam or tempurpedic mattress change it to a traditional one that has more internal ventilation?
Sensory issue? Preference? Doesn't sound like it's a problem. I have to use the fan all night long too, even when it's cold outside. Air circulation is always nice.
It used to happen to me every day around 3-4 PM when I was about 30. Doctor told me it was hormone related and not to worry about it, but I was a grown women. I'd check with a doctor on this one. Sounds too strange to let pass.
You say "symptoms" - is he sick? Is it bothering him when his stomach and ears get warm? Can you clarify a bit more on this?
