Please cook the ham in a roaster or in the oven. No crock pot.
I buy my spiral sliced hams at Aldi. Yummy!
Hello ladies,
I am not much of a cook. However, I am hosting Easter for my family. I would like to cook a ham in the crock pot. What kind should I buy? What sort of sides would you suggest?
Thanks!

Please do not cook in crockpot. You can get any cut or a spiral cut ham mdepends on your budget. Hams are inexpensive around this time of year. Spiral, cut a bit more. All you have to do is heat it in the oven not more than an hour or so. No advantages to cooking in crock, pot. Actually more of a chance of ruining it.
I kind of have to ditto the thumbs down in the crock pot thing. I did it once and ended up with shredded ham. It didn't taste bad, but was so not what I was going for. What we do now is get the precooked spiral sliced honey ham with the little bag of glaze mix attached. You just reheat it. The only difference is that instead of mixing the glaze mix with water I use pineapple juice from a can of pineapple and then stick the slices of pineapple on the ham while it is heating up.
We always have mashed potatoes, baked beans, corn on the cob, deviled eggs and usually another veggie.
Also, just a thought. If you want to invest in a really nifty cooking gadget you could always get a roaster. We have done our turkey, ham, chickens all kinds of things in it. We have even used it as a giant crockpot and made a huge vat of chilli. It allows you to roast your meat and keep your oven clear for the sides and is a life saver for big holiday meals.
Most hams are pre cooked and need only be warmed in the oven for about 10 minutes per pound.
Boars Head is a great brand if they have them there.
Or Honey Baked Ham.
Sides? Steam fresh green beans, melt butter with slivered almonds & pour over beans in a casserole dish. Green salad.
Potatoes of some sort...cheesy potatoes are good in a crock pot. Ham? Not so much.
I think that is against some sort of law-and really not any easier. Ham is not complicated-you simply bake it in a shallow pan for one hour, then glaze it every 15 minutes for the second hour-it can sit out for hours and is delicious at room temp. Hams come fully cooked/cured, you can also buy one that has been pre-sliced. you don't even have to glaze a ham-it is perfect no matter what. I make a thick glaze with brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, ground cloves and Dijon mustard. Everything goes with ham! Happy Easter!
I wouldn't do a ham in a crock pot.
I like a crock pot for many things but ham is not one of them.
The easiest thing in the world is a pre cooked spiral cut bone in ham.
Put it in a roaster pan (a rack can hold it off the bottom of the pan), put a half inch of water in the bottom of the pan.
Cover the top of the ham in foil (the bottom part on the rack is not covered) and then cook it at a low temp (the package will say what it should be) for the correct amount of time per lb.
Last half hour you can remove the foil and coat with a glaze to finish cooking but we like to leave it unglazed and have a pineapple relish with it on the side at serving time.
Because it is gradually steamed, it comes out perfectly juicy and moist.
yikes in a crockpot do you have a recipe hams are fairly large & have juices that may spill out unless your using a full size roaster not a crock pot.The oven is the way to go for ham
Ditto for the crock pot. The ham will be dried out and chewy. As for sides
We do:
Potato salad, deviled eggs, usually some sort of roasted vegetable, a veggie tray and a coconut cake. Some bread or rolls and your done
Don't put a ham in the crock pot unless you want ham soup. Roast it in the oven. Or you can get a pre-cooked n that just needs to be heated up and sliced.
Sides - we like potato salad or cole slaw, steamed carrots, roasted asparagus.
I have cooked a ham in a crockpot. It is a bit different and you must be careful not to overcook. Do NOT buy a spiral cut ham. It will dry out super fast. I put the ham in a crock pot with a cup or so of apple cider and cook for about 6 hours-but watch it after 4 hours. I don't have an oven to fit a ham so had no choice. I have cooked one this way 4 times . The only time I got a failure was a spiral ham. It totally dried out. I have also cooked with just a bit of cider and pineapple juice along with some sliced pineapple like in the oven. It is different but not soupy and does come out pretty good.
I have never gotten a chewy ham. I would prefer the oven but like a mentioned, I don;t have one that I can fit a ham.
I suggest that cooking a ham in the crock pot is not the best way to go. A ham does well with dry heat. A crock pot uses moist heat.
I googled "cooking ham in a crock pot" and found a couple of sites. Here is the one I read. It sounds good. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=2007112123370...
It pays to think ouside the box. Glad you asked this question.
Ham (like everyone else says, bake in oven, not crockpot) goes with any sides:
sweet potatoes
scalloped potatoes (hash brown casserole is good)
macaroni and cheese
deviled eggs
green rice
asparagus
broccoli/cauliflower
green beans
baked beans
layered lettuce or spinach salad
jello salads are great too can add much color to the meal.
No crock pot. To keep ham from being dry, bring to room temperature before putting it in the oven. You can also cook in an oven bag to keep it moist, especially if it's spiral sliced.
