Embarrassing Medical Question :/

Hi Moms,

I have an embarrassing question that I HAVE to ask. I became a new mom in October 2007 and since I gave birth (vaginally) I have had severe itching in my vaginal area, mostly my perineum where I tore and had stitches. It felt like I was wearing a cactus tampon!! I told my doctor about it (in Houston, before we moved to AZ) and after testing me for yeast & other infection (all neg results) she said it was just because I'm breastfeeding and on the progesterone only birth control pills, that I am dry down there. She told me to use Olive Oil in that area for moisture. I tried that and it didn't help and sort of felt gross, but I still did it for several months before giving up. I went back to her because I decided to get an IUD and told her I was still dealing with the itching problem. She assured me that it was just lack of estrogen which is causing dryness and itching. Then when we moved here, I went to another doctor to get the string on my IUD cut and told her about the problem too. She said the same thing, that I'm just dry and it also looked like I had a hemmoroid and to use Prep H. I tried to explain to her that the itching is just in certain areas. One itchy spot is next to my vaginal opening and one is on my anus and one is on my skin on my butt. There was no visible sign of anything, so she didn't know what to say really. Well, I really tried to stop scratching (with toilet paper every time I use the restroom), and it got a tiny bit better for a while, but then started itching bad again. Now, there are welps that look like a mosquito bite in those areas where I said it itched! I know that it is not herpes or any other STD. My husband and I are very faithful to each other and we both got tested for every STD before we had sex. Has anyone had this problem before?? I go to the doctor AGAIN on Friday to show her the welps. I'm not sure if she'll even know what to do though! It's driving me crazy~~this only started right after childbirth! All my other friends with babies have normal sex lives again, while I just sit back and itch!! HELP! =0

So What Happened?

Hi Everyone! I want to say to all of you THANK YOU!! I really appreciate all of your responses and feel so much better feeling your sympathy and taking in all of your suggestions. Well, I had an appointment with a Nurse Practitioner (first available) and she looked at my whelps and didn't know what it was. She wanted me to come back to see the doctor for a Colposcopy but I couldn't get an appointment until July 22nd. Since we were planning a trip home to Texas, I called my doctor there and was seen this past Monday. She is pretty sure that it is a fungal infection and prescribed an antifungal/steroid cream to use. She scraped some skin cells to culture just to be sure, but is pretty convinced that it is fungal. I've been using the cream for a few days now and it is starting to go away. I'm still not sure how I've kept my husband from getting this, but am just thankful at this point! I have no idea how I got this--the hospital maybe? I don't know, since I've had this since the birth of my daughter 9 months ago!! Anyways, we should know for sure what it is in about another week, but in the mean time, I'm thankful it's just me and that the cream is helping.
Thanks again for all of your responses and support! I love Mamasource!!

Hi Klkshsu,

I am sorry to hear about this. If it is in fact vaginal dryness, a lube may help. There are many types on the market, but I would suggest System JO or Eros brands. System JO is developed by a pharmaceutical company and is extremely female friendly. They both make water-based and silicone-based lubes. You could try either one and see if that helps. If you need help finding them, let me know as I am in the adult party business.

Good Luck!

Hi,

I had a similar experience after the birth of my son. It itched like crazy in my vagina after his birth (c-section) and I scratched it with toilet paper when I wiped (just like you!) My OB/GYN told me it was like my body was in menopause (because of the breastfeeding) and that is why I was dry and itchy there. I stopped breastfeeding my son when he was 6 months of age but did not get relief for another six months (so he was one by that point). I would use Pampers Sensitive Skin wipes to wipe down there when it started itching and that would relieve it somewhat. However, I never had welps that looked like mosquito bites. I would definitely get that checked out. Maybe you are scratching so hard it is creating blister like areas. Hope this helps!

When I was pregnant, I had a similar issue with a spot on my shoulder. It itched all the time and it seemed like nothing I did would make it stop. The only relief that I got was from using baby oil gel. Not sure how that would work in your situation. Have you tried doing a sitz bath (look on the internet for various suggestions or recipes) or sitting in some baking soda and water in the tub?

You might want to go ahead and get a STD check just to be sure. You can do this very easily by registering over the website: www.tstd.org and then going into a local lab to give blood and urine samples. You don't have to give your name even and at least that would rule those possiblities out.

HI,
I bet it is female jock itch. Try a jock itch cream for about 4 weeks to make sure it is good and gone, and make sure you are always very very dry down there. I am guesing this is what it is. I have just found out what I had for months now is just common jock itch, and am in the process of eliminating it. Check with your husband if he has any sort of issues as well because it can be passed back and forth to eachother.

Hi there-

I think the advice that you got to go see the dermatologist is a good idea. I would try that next. I will tell you that I gave birth in January and just recently I had a fungal infection on my stomach. I know it's not in the same area as yours, but I had VERY itch welps that looked like big mosquito bites as well. My Dr. told me to us Tinactin cream (the foot fungus medicine) on them and believe it or not it worked and they are gone. It sounds like you may have the same thing just in a different area. I bet it's a fungal infection of some sort and just because it's near your vagina and butt doesn't mean it has to be a yeast infection either. Sometimes after a major trauma to your body like birth your body gets out of wack and this can cause all kind of strange things to appear on and in your body. Just to give yourself some relief I would definitely use an anti-itch ointment like hydrocortisone until you can see the Dr. That might help a bit, unti they can figure out what is going on. Good luck to you and hope you feel better soon!

This is a longer shot, but it may be a condition known as vulvadynia. Vulvadynia usually involves pain, although I would not be surprised if some women have just itching.

You can get more info at the Vulvar Pain Foundation website and http://www.vulvarpainfoundation.org

I have vulvadynia myself, and I keep it 100% under control with a low oxalate acid diet. You can get info about it at the website. Basically the excess oxalate acid that you are peeing out is irritating you.

It's easy and free to try a low oxalate acid diet and see if it helps. Also, try gently washing with water after you pee to get the "acidic" pee off of you. Make sure you have a bottle of water with you when you go to a public restroom. A little water on toilet paper is enough.

I know that you have anal itching, which makes me think it's something else, but you've already been tested for various infections.

Hi - if you havent tried a Dermatologist - skin doctor -maybe you should give one of them a try before you try your regular GP or OBG/YN - if it truly is a skin-related thing maybe they would be better equiped to handle it and treat it - GoodLuck - S.

It actually may be a hormonal issue and you can purchase hormone supplements in the forms of pills or creams that might help you. Many chiropractors offer these types of products. Good luck!

Hi sweetie,
Don't worry. This happens to moms sometimes. I have had really good luck with essential oils. I would suggest rose geranium. It reverses all skin conditions and is aslo hormone balancing. Other oils are good too. All you do is add some to a carrier oil like olive or vegetable and or a lotion and rub it on the sore spot. You can wear it like pefume or apply to the bottom of your feet too. It works like a drug. It takes about 20 minutes to get into your blood stream. You can learn more about them on the internet. You can go to the library and check out a book on them too. You can order it online at www.aromaticbotanicals.com
Hope this helps,
N.
