This is really emabarrassing, and maybe a little TMI. I think that I developed a hemorrhoid yesterday. I'm not sure why, it was a busy day planning and executing my daughter's birthday party, but after breakfast and before we left the house everything seemed to be fine. I had a normal / slightly large bm that came rather effortlessly and felt very satisfying. After the party we all went out to eat and I had steak for the first time in quite awhile. I started to feel a little over-ful and a little upset gassy tummy but not too bad. At some point after we came home and I was sorting stuff and putting away party catering supplies etc..I started feeling itchy and burning down there. When I finally took a moment to go to the bathroom, shower and have a look with the mirror, youwzza.....there is an angry red lump there right next to the exit .. Larger than a jelly bean, smaller than an eyeball, and boy is it sore! I don't have insurance, and I'm saving $ to go to the OB for my annual in about 2 months. I can't possibly wait that long with this, it's pretty darn uncomfortable, and I don't want to whack the budget and go to somebody else for this.( also a little too embarrassed to go to someone else to have my privates inspected) do any of you have any experience with this and any over the counter remedies to bring relief quickly? Thanks in advance for any tips and advice you can offer. I've looked at some pretty detailed photos online, and this looks pretty classic....what a p in the a!

What can I do next?

Tucks a witch hazel wipe and try soaking in an Epsom salt bath. You can do this several times a day until the swelling subsides.

Tuck's pads are supposed to work wonders. I'm fortunate enough not to have experienced this problem, but have had TONS of patients that request and swear by them. They're OTC and can be found at any pharmacy or grocery store. Good luck!

I got them with all of my pregnancies. The last one was the size of a large grape and hurt! I used Preparation H several times a day and it helped so much!

Good luck

if you decide to use suppositories, put them in the freezer. they feel sooooo good when they are frozen. they're small enough that they thaw without damaging your bum.

gas can cause a hem. Don't run to the doc. Just get yourself the hem cream and suppositories and give yourself a couple of days. Be sure you get the stronger stuff. I bet you will have relief by tomorrow night if you get what you need tonight.

It most likely is just a hemorrhoid. Most over the counter remedies will get rid of it in about a week. If after a week or so of treatment its still there, it might be time to schedule an emergency appointment. But most likely, any OTC cream will do the job.

You've gotten good advice here about Prep H and witch hazel, and soaking. Use the Prep H every night so that it's on there for hours at a time - better than just using during the day.(My doctor actually told me that.)

This sounds really gross, but I will tell you the truth. When I had trouble, a digital exam by my doctor to make sure that I didn't have internal hemorrhoids actually made a WORLD of difference. (I certainly wasn't expecting that, I will say!) It's like she stuffed it back up in there, or something! (I don't know, I'm just guessing!) I tell you this so that you don't get squeamish about your doctor doing it. And if she/he doesn't, you should ask for a check to make sure you don't have an internal hemorrhoid while you are already there. I got so much relief after that, that I think it bears mentioning in case it would help you find the relief it gave me!

I just want to add that what your doctor CAN do is prescribe a cream that works a lot better than Prep H. I DID need that for mine. If you think that you could call the office and ask the nurse to have your doctor call in a prescription for it, so that by the time you come in for your regularly scheduled appointment, she can check your hemorrhoid's progress, the doc might be willing to write that script, KNOWING that you already have an appointment. (You would need to explain it like that, I think, to keep her from saying that you need to just come in. ) I will say that my prescription cream really DOES work better than Prep H AND she recommended specifically to use it at night. I still use it once in a while for a little flare up.

When you go to the bathroom, never push hard or strain. Blow through your mouth while voiding. That helps to not put so much pressure on that hemorrhoid.

What no one has mentioned yet on this thread is how to help with your eating. You need plenty of fiber and WATER every single day. In the morning with your breakfast, eat at least 3 prunes (4 is better) to help keep your bowel movements soft. That will make a big difference in your ability to manage your hemorrhoid on an ongoing basis. Google sources of fiber so that you are getting the best "bang for your buck" with what you eat. Drink HALF your weight in ounces of water every single day. Drink at least 10 ounces of it in the morning when you wake up, before you start walking around. That will help too.

Good luck - I sure hope you get a handle on this.

Several answers are very good and conservative treatment is often all you need, BUT, if the hemorrhoid is thrombosed, different story.
If it is soft, sometimes, it can be reduced by actually pushing it back in, using the creams or TUCKS (witch hazel pad), you need to be pretty relaxed for it to stay in.
However, thrombosed 'roids are full of clotted blood and need to be lanced by Dr., by a small procedure done in the office, they use a scalpel to open and remove the clot. Relatively simple, relatively painless and instant relief. After that, use TUCKS and maybe some sitz baths, will heal up in few days, very minor discomfort compared the what you are having now.
A surgeon, or GI doc, or proctologist is who you need to see, your OB doc might do it too.

Suppositories if the pain is really bad. There are also wipes. All over the counter. I have also used petroleum jelly to keep the area from rubbing against itself too much. They are pretty freaking annoying!

Try the hemmroid cream or ice might help. Try to use moist wipes rather than toilet paper which can irritate, chafe & cause it to possibly bleed. Visit a doctor as soon as possible to see if this is what it is to get it taken care of. Goodluck!

Just go to the pharmacy and buy all the hemmeroid stuff available, one of them will do the job. The suppositories are good to put in at night before bed.
Take an otc anti-inflammatory too.

There should be a nurse's hotline you can call 24 hours/day 365 days a year. Call your doctor's office number and see if an answering service or nurse answers. If you get an answering service ask them if they know of a hotline you can call.
Anyway call the nurse's hotline and tell them what happened and discribe the red buldge and ask them what to do. If you have a pharmacy in your area that is open today and has a pharmisist on duty you may be able to get some really good advice from the pharmisist.

it is most likely a hemorrhoid. Go to the local CVS or RiteAid or even your grocery store and pick up some Preparation H and some witch hazel wipes...they do offer quick relief.

IF it starts bleeding - like a period - you must go to the ER. Some hemorrhoids will bleed after a big bowel movement...but they will typically stop after a few minutes. if yours bleeds like a period - then you need to go to the ER.

There is really nothing a doctor can do for you other than tell you to eat more fiber, don't hold your bowels, use moisture wipes and drink plenty of water.

I wouldn't take aspirin at all! A hemorrhoid is a varicose vein, and you don't want to do anything to cause more bleeding, which aspirin does!

If there's no bleeding now, you can use any over-the-counter hemorrhoid cream. Use a small panty liner placed further back that usual to keep it from getting on your underwear. Eat fiber-rich foods so that you have frequent small bowel movements with no straining. Do not sit on the toilet for very long - just a few minutes. The longer you sit there, there worse it is. Use wipes vs. toilet paper. Dr. Oz did a segment on how rough toilet paper can be on hemorrhoids. Just wipe as gently as possible and as little as possible to do the job.

You can also use witch hazel for comfort. Epson salts help to remove excess fluid. They are not expensive. Your pharmacist can help you - go to the consult desk and ask for confidential advice.

I don't think you need to go to a doctor - there's not much they will do for a one-time occurrence. People with serious conditions may choose surgery but you're nowhere near that point. When you go to the OB, have him/her check.

Sleep without underwear so the area airs out - adding moisture there with creams and gels can cause itchy rashes.
