Encopresis Options/ Naturopath?

My 10 year old son has suffered from encopresis for years. Miralax failed miserably; Senokot causes cramping and stress. We have tried for years to get it under control to no avail, including the encopresis treatment center. I'm starting to think a naturopath might be better. Any experiences or recommendations?

What can I do next?

He may have food allergies. I was treated for various things for years only to find out it was all dairy related. I would try the nautropath route, especially if the other stuff isn't really working. No sense treating the symptoms, if you don't know the cause.

I have worked with natropaths and have a high regard for their profession. One thing I have noticed though is that those who practice homeopathy seem to have much more success in general to those who just practice natropathy. The one I have worked with is Joann Dechant ND. I think she is working in Renton now. But look around and see who has experience with homeopathy.

The nice thing about homeopathy is once you find the right treatment (this can take a while, I'm afraid) then the treatment is just a one time dose. The "medicine" works on aligning the body to heal itself.

My daughter had a problem when she was much younger. It turned out she had Celiac disease. There is the Encopresis Center in Edmonds, Washington. Their url is http://encopresistreatment.com/. Also, I recommend Dr. Cheryl Woods, Naturopath in Lynnwood at the Trinity Health Center. She is absolutely TOPS in treating digestive problems. Probably finding out what's wrong from a Naturopath is the best way to go, because the Encopresis center never became aware of the fact that my daughter had Celiac disease, but the Naturopath - another great one is Dr. Jodi Berg, on Colby in Everett. She is amazing. She diagnosed my daughter as Celiac. She was so bad, it was destroying her mind. Fortunately we got her off wheat before she would have become autistic from the poisons her body was throwing into her blood as a result of this illness.

Also, I would talk to a nutritionist. I noticed that the Encopresis center mainly centered on softening the stool. However, food allergies can be causing the symptoms you are describing. Food allergies are best found out by going to a naturopath.

We had this problem with my nephews! We started making smoothies, yogurt, fruit, orange juice and ice, whatever flavors he likes, blended them and made it the dessert of the night...it just happened to work wonders in that department within a few days! We were just trying to make a healthy dessert and wound up with a cure for them! Good luck!

I've got several suggestions:

An osteopath will incorporate whatever modality works best for your son, and is generally covered by insurance. Naturopath's are tough to get coverage for. http://www.woma.org/

There's a product called Florify (it's a probiotic) that may be able to be given to a child your son's age -- check that out with your doctor. It essentially helps with intestinal health.

There's also a product I just heard about, and have heard good things -- Kefir. You can generally get it at health food stores.

Good luck!

Angel :)

I agree naturopath would be best. I would start with probiotics and aloe vera juice (best one I found is at Trader Joe's the gallon size) you can mix 50/50 with juice. The best probiotics I have found hands down is Jarro-Dophilus EPS. Also drinking lots of water. You can go into Whole Foods or any health food store and ask what would be best for a natural solution. I hope this helps!

I had to look up what this was but I do have some suggestions for you. I have to take pain meds and extra calcium and what worked best to keep me regular was prune juice (better even then the fiber stuff) It has no cramping or side effects and 4-6oz before bed each night works great. If I have an issue (like forgot) I was taking milk of magnisia but am going to try epson salts next time. Prune juice is a natural daily routine. I also take Mangosteen juice which is a natural supliment that can help with a number of ailments. Xango is the first company to market it in the USA and has a patent on the whole fruit juice all the others are extracts.
www.jfe12.mymangosteen.com has lots of info or you can just google mangosteen + (enter ailment) and see what comes up. Good Luck, Jen

Unfortunately, I used to suffer from this problem as well. I changed my diet completely and I removed all chemicals from my living environment. I use only all natural products that I now sell because they are so amazing. I also use a fiber product that my company distributes that has proven to help tremendously. Since all of these changes I have had no issues at all. If you would like more information please feel free to e-mail me.

GOOD LUCK!!!!

Change of diet and supportive proBiotics is a sure win. Parasites and unhealthy bacteria CAN NOT live in a healthy body. Food allergies can be solved by eliminating the foods.
YOU DON'T HAVE TO SPEND A LOT OF MONEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GET OFF THE DRUG MERRY GO ROUND NOW. WE HAVE BEEN CONTROLLED LONG ENOUGH. TAKE CHARGE!!!!
Start by eliminating any sugarless foods (pure chemicals), any
processed foods (pure chemicals),and finally wheat. That is a tall order but when your son starts to feel better everyone will feel better.

I would recommend Dr Erika Siegel at Nature Cures Clinic down town or in SE, Dr Roman Krupa at Urban Wellness on SE Division/49th. www.urbanwellnesspdx.com ###-###-####
Both are experienced Naturopaths, parents and great people.
There is also a group of Naturopaths in NE at a family/midwifery practice but I can't remember the name. I had a home birth with one of their Naturopathic Doctors and it was a great experience. If you want me to dig out their info, contact me at ____@____.com

I highly recommend a naturopath. Ask about digestive health and gut flora- also find out about food allergies/ intolerances.
This kind of condition is directly related to digestive health and unfortunately, the medications do not deal with the root problem, only mask the symptoms while quite probably doing further damage.
There is so much the medical community is missing out on regarding gut/ digestive health and muchof ourdiseaseand sickness can be traced right back to the gut.
My daughter was dealing with many issues for many years- we saw quite a few doctors and always she was fine. She began to get really sick for no apparant reason and we were referred by a family friend to a naturopath and it was recomended we look into allergies and gut health. We discovered she and her sister were celiacs and she had so much damage to her intestined and gut. After 2 years of restorative, drug free treatments, there are a few minor lingering issues but the amount of healing that has taken place and the things that are no longer an issue are nothing short of a miracle.
See a naturopath but make sure you ask specific questions about gut flora, digestive health and food intolerances and allergies.

Hi M.,

A naturopath is a fantastic idea! We have a wonderful one in Kirkland, WA. As far as coverage, most have payment plans and will work with you. Also, having suffered from constipation my whole life, I can tell you that it can be a myriad of things. For us, we use 3 LAC which is a probiotic developed to fight candida and parasites. That was definitely what caused mine. I had this for 15 years and did not know it. SO, I am a big advocate of natural medicine, because the unnatural, like antibiotics can and does make it so much worse! If your child has issues with it, chances are so do you and the rest of your immediate family. We treat our whole family and though it is a process, it has helped so very much. :) You can google 3 Lac or go to www.healthtrax.org or you can visit www.candidafree.net to get information. Blessings to you!

Dr. Christnacht near the South Hill Mall is an awesome naturopath. I suffered under the hands of a well-known HMO for years, even had my gallbladder removed to try to relieve symptoms, to find out it was severe food allergies all along. I highly reccommend him! Depending on your insurance provider, if reccommneded by your family physician he is covered by soem insurance.

Naturpathics are wonderful! I would highly reccomend them! They definately go deep to HEAL instead of treat the symptoms. And it's often SO much cheaper!

I had ringworm for 2 1/2 years about 10 years ago. I got it from my aunt who got it from her cat. We went to doctors and they said it wasn't. Ha! Finally, in desperation we went to a naturpathic and within a month it was gone. I have never gotten it back.

I agree with most of the ladies on here, purify your diet. Get off refined ANYTHING! Some books you might be interested in: Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon which addresses "politically correct" nutriontionalists. It contains an absolutely fantastic amount of info and recipes. WELL-WORTH the money. I bought mine on Amazon. And Chemical Free Kids which address chemicals in our lives. It is shocking. Prepare to never be the same if you read them.

My daughter struggled with this from a very small age. She also was put on Murilax and mineral oil ect. What finally worked for me was a change in diet. My mother goes to a naturopath and follows a very healthy lifestyle. She introduced me to acidophilus supliments wich promote good digestion. You can find them at most health food stores or even Fred Meyer. I started my daughter on these very young now all we drink in this house is acidophilus no regular milk. Other changes we made were changeing to a high fiber diet such as oatmeal, blueberries, low carb products are high fiber, fruits, whole grains, beans, my daughter loves pinto beans. Make a bean and cheese burrito in a low carb tortilla very high fiber. Also lots of water with these fiber foods. Makeing these changes to her diet allowed her body to go back to normal she does well now with no help from laxatives, mineral oils or frequent doctor visits for emergencies.

Hi M.,

I think it's a great idea to check with alternative healers. My 8 year old daughter has epilepsy. Western medicine including her Neurologist couln't find anything.

Alternative healers discovered parasites, which western doctors dont' even test for unless it shows up on the MRI's or CAT scans.

Get rid of all dairy and wheat/gluten in his diet. Get him tested for all food allergies. I mentioned some but here are some others: corn, soy, sugar and MSG. A naturopath can recommend some good probiotics...he needs them. Have you checked for pinworms? Good Luck!
