Hey Mommas,
I am having some womanly troubles and my gyno wants me to consider Endometrial Ablation. Have any of you gone threw this? Any Pros and Cons that I should know? What was your down time after the procedure? And was it painful? I need more information. All the information I have gotten off the internet has been the same and I just wanted to hear some true life experiences. Would you or wouldnt you recommend it? Thanks for all your help.

Ps.... My doctor wants to perfom the one Thermachoice Endometrial Ablation.

Thank you soooo much!!
T.

I can't personally help, b/c I am too young for EA, but...my mother and m-i-l both had it done with fantastic results. They are both really glad they did, and my MIL even wishes she'd done it earlier. Based on their experience I will most likely do it as soon as I am done having kids.

My best friend had it done because she would bleed for 10 days straight and soak through ultra sized tampons every two hours. She hasn't regretted it. She has no more period and the procedure was quick and easy - done in the office in a short amount of time. Her recovery time was about a week. She used ibuprofen for the pain afterwards. She still gets PMS like she did before she had it done, but the difference is, she doesn't have to deal with her period every month. If I could afford it, I would definitely do it myself.

I am also considering EA. I've been gathering info, and just from the people I have talked to, I would talk to your doctor about Novasure rather than Thermachoice. I know 3 people who have done EA. The one who did Novasure LOVES it - no periods since. The two that had Thermachoice hated it. One had some short-term improvement, but ended up with a hysterectomy a few years later. She wishes she had done the hysterectomy the first time around. The second one also said the results were very short-lived.

I found one study online that said that the results were much better with Novasure, but it did say that that was without any hormone pre-treatment, which could make Thermachoice more effective. At any rate, my doctor does both & I am meeting with him Wed. to discuss it all.

T.,

I have an endometrial ablasion about 18 years ago and I am so glad I did! The proceedure was not difficult - I went home after a couple of hours. I had some abdominal cramping, but nothing as severe as the monthly cramps I had experienced for years. I had some spotting - off and on for a couple of months - but the ablasion worked and I have never had second thoughts.

I send you my best wishes!

E.

I had an endometrial ablation in Dec. 2006 it wasn't too bad. I gave birth naturally twice and it didn't hurt as much as that (the doctor warned me that I would have labor pains during the procedure).

I am very glad that I had the procedure done. My periods are much lighter now (3 to 4 days a month w/ a pantyliner max), my cramps are not so bad, BUT I still have PMS (grouchy, zits).
Good luck.

I had this done earlier this year. I have been very happy with the results! The downtime was not bad. After the medication wore off the day of the surgery I was in excrutiating pain for about 7 hours and then it was gone as quickly as it had come. Part of the reason for the pain was that I had a bad reaction to the loritab they put me on and threw up, then I didn't dare take anymore because I didn't know how much medication my body had absorbed. I would just suggest making sure that you have a hot pad ready to go. But from midnight on I felt great and wouldn't have even known I had the procedure the next day. I would totally recommend it! If you have any other questions feel free to contact me!

Hi T.,

I had the ablation done in the hospital about 2 1/2 years ago and it was the best thing ever. I had very heavy periods and fibroids for a couple years and this did the trick. Mild cramping for a day then no pain at all....and no more periods. If I had the choice again I would do it for sure.

Best of luck!

My mom had one last month. She is menopausal, but had some weird bleeding off & on for months. She is REALLY glad that she did it. She said that she actually felt better the day after they did the surgery than before. She did say that she has some pretty bad cramping 2 days after, but they only lasted a day. Good luck & I hope whatever you decide helps!

I had the option of EA in 2001 or complete hysterectomy.

I opted for a complete hysterectomy, bikini line incision(can't even see the incision now), HRT patch, no weight gain, feel & look better than ever......BEST decision I ever made.

I opted for the hyster because: my Dr said that you sometimes have to go back and redo the EA's. I was ready to end all of the issues I had been having and have no further treatments other that preventative care and that is why I chose my option.

I have been very pleased with my decision and no regrets at all. You might get some info on EA on the website hystersisters.com. That site helped me a lot and had many options as far as not having hysterectomy, what to expect with other procedures, etc.

My SIL opted for the EA in 2004. She has no regrets with her decision.

It is a personal choice for you and what is best for your health.

I wish you the best.

I loved, loved, loved my ablation!!! It hurt mildly for a couple days but not enough to slow me down.
Pros: either light period or no period
- no messing around with hormones!!!!
- minimally painful
- no more babies (definitely a pro for me, I have 4 boys, I'm done)
- its day surgery for LONG lasting results
Cons:
- depending on your age you may need to have it done again, but I wouldn't think twice about having it done again, not a big deal. I was 30 when I had mine done so I know I will need it done again.
- no more babies, I have to put this in both categories because some people want more children, after ablation you can't have anymore. I should rephrase that though, you can still get pregnant, very, very slight chance, but you cannot have a viable pregnancy because there is not enough endomertrial tissue to maintain a pregnancy
- I can't think of any other cons

It is truly the BEST thing I have ever done for myself. Good luck!
