I am scheduled for a HSG procedure (basically an x-ray using contrast dye to check your fallopian tubes). I've have heard this could be painful and I am quite nervous. Anyone have any advice? I was told to take 3 Ibuprofen prior to the procedure.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, I had the test and it wasn't that bad. I took 800mg of Ibuprofen before and I just had really bad cramping while the procedure was being completed. About 20 seconds of pain but not intolerable and this is coming from someone who does not have any pain tolerance!!

I've had this done 2 times. It is not painful but will cause a lot of cramping. And I know that I had some spotting after. Definitely take the Ibuprofen. It should help. Good Luck.

I had one 4 years ago. My tubes were clear and I had some slight cramping during the procedure but that was all- no meds needed. As another poster said, if you've been through childbirth, this is nothing. regardless of the level of pain/ cramping you might have.

The procedure does hurt, but the pain is over quickly. Don't worry. Good luck!

Hello. I had that done. I had no blockage or scaring and to me, it was extremelly painful. I think the most painful thing I've ever done. I took 4 ibubrofen before. I guess it just depends on the person. Try to relax and good luck.

I had this proceedure a few years ago to determine why I was miscarrying frequently.
It is somewhat painful, but I noticed that I was very dizzy and nauseus afterward! Don't go alone and certainly don't drive home by yourself, which is what I did because I didn't think I would have a problem. I almost fainted while leaving the hospital and had to pull over on the way home. In my opinion, it was worth finding out that one of my tubes was blocked, and I believe the whole experience wouldn't have been so difficult for me had I not been there by myself to move around so quickly. But, that might have just been my body's response.

The pain was not too bad. It was similar to bad menstrual cramps, but did not last very long. They didn't find any blockage with mine so it might be different if there is a problem. If you already have a baby, it is nothing compared to that!

Not only did I have one I use to assist with them and yes everyone was different, some women were like it's over that was easy and some were in a lot of pain so yes take a couple tylenol or whatever you use for pain, there is cramping cause they have to dilate (just a little) but you went throught labor right??? It's nothing like that!!!! Just relax and take deep breaths it's over pretty fast. The worst part for me was laying there naked with all the equipment in you and have to turn while they xray you weird!!!......... good luck and don't worry

pain is usually equal to amount of scarring or blockage. I compare it to severe menstural cramping, but short term.. although moms that have more scar tissue and/or blockage, it tends to be more painful, because the dye sometimes opens/flushs those tubes. Good luck!

I had a hysterosalpingogram (HSG) about 5 years ago when we seemed to be having trouble concieving after 2 miscarriages. It is uncomfortable, sort of like the worst menstrual cramps you could think of. I took motrin before the procedure, and tried not to tense up because the doctor said it would make it worse. Don't worry, it won't be too terribly painful, just take slow deep breaths and relax, try to think about something else. I know what your're going through and being a nurse (I'm one, too) helped me to prepare for the procedure. Good luck and God bless!!

I had this done and I was fine you can take something to ease your mind but you should be ok. I had endometriosis is the reason I got mine done. I laid there and even got to watch it go up inside it was pretty cool. I could tell there were all open and fine to do the artificial insemination so we got done and BOOM got our NOW 4 yr old MY where does the time go. I will say IF you are getting it done for the reason I did and only want 1 you will have NO TROUBLE getting pregnant again. We planned only 1 but our lil boy came along and OH MY he is a character. He is 16 mo old and my kids are my everything. Good luck.

This was so painful for me that I told them to stop the procedure toward the end of it, not knowing that it was about to be completed anyway (I was able to hold on for the last few seconds). I took some Tylenol prior. The doc told me it would feel like bad menstrual cramps. NOT. Like a lot of things, it will differ with each person and if it helps us, it's best to "just do it."

I also didn't have any blockage or scarring and it was painful to me as well. it didn't help that I had an intern doing the procedure and 2 times he inserted the catheter and then when he started to put in the dye, the cath popped out. twice. finally he went to get the doctor and he was able to get it done. so by that point I was pretty fed up with the whole thing. maybe part of my pain was just the frustration with the whole thing, but the dye was definitely uncomfortable. the one good thing, as long as it's done right, it shouldn't take very long. good luck!
