Hi Everyone,

My son is wanting a Bearded Dragon lizard for Christmas, which I am considering. I just want to learn whatever I can before making a decision. Have any of you had one or know of anyone who has? What can you tell me about them? Are they good with kids? Easy or hard to take care of? Whatever you can share, I really appreciate. Can hardly believe Christmas is around the corner!!

My neice has one. Just know that it is a committment. They pretty much live forever. It's less mainentance than a dog but more than a fish. Hope that helps!

I have had 3 bearded dragons, 30+ snakes, and 2 Uromastyx. Beardies are the most intelligent lizards there are. They have individual personalities just like dogs. They are sweet and amazing creatures. There is a lot that goes into caring for them. http://www.lynnsbeardeddragons.com/main.html this link is to an amazing woman who breeds them. She also dresses them up. :~) She has tips and instructions and knows her beardies. As long as they are held and played with on a regular basis they are amazing. There is a show that she will be at in December in Arlington. http://www.dfwlonestarreptileexpos.com/ this is the website for the show. Some people actually walk them on leashes. They are amazing!!!

Almost all reptiles can carry some form of salmonella. This means lots of hand washing or antibacterial pumps.

They are fabulous pets as long as they are cared for correctly. And they last for quite some time. I think like 10-20 years so it is a commitment. So please make sure that he is ready for it. If you have any other questions you are more than welcome to IM me.

Good luck!!!

My family has a bearded dragon which is very affectionate for a lizard. It has been handled since day one and is handled and played with constantly. It is kept in a 60 gallon tank but is also allowed to run around a certain room in their home. They are a lot of work and somewhat expensive to maintain proper care of. I would only recommend getting one if your son can be extremely responsible and care for it properly and is prepared for the time it will take. Please don't let this be a novelty gift that he tires of after a few months.

I think it will depend on your son's age and responsibility level. We talked to a pet store owner a few months back about them and he did not recommend that we get one with our young boys 8 and 11. We have looked at leopard gecko which he said would be much better for them to have. We where going to wait for Christmas as well but now we've decided to go a different rought all together. One thing that we didn't think about till we had changed our minds was how hard will it be to find someone to pet sit it when you go out of town or something. They are beautiful creatures!!!!!!! My husband wants one.

Good luck and God Bless!!

We have had lots of lizards and some of them require a lot. My son has had his Bearded Dragon lizard for 2 years now and it is very good with my kids, I have 4 kiddos. You can feed them lettuce, grapes, carrots, but ours likes crickets the most. My son takes him with him places and never had any problems. A heat lamp and food and water. It is the easiest lizard we have had to take care of.

I know of people who have one. They need to be handled on a regular basis or they will get mean and not let anyone touch them. I would think about something different. I know that a Euromastix is a very tame and friendly lizard. I think with most lizards they need to be handled daily from when they are born.

Good Luck!

My brother has a lot of geckos, a couple of snakes and possibly something else as well. He had a bearded dragon and that along with geckos that bite (the type of gecko-the others are gentle) were the things he would not let my kids touch (11 yrs old) nor his daughter who is 5. He got rid of it.
