I think it will look great! I also like the idea of a flower for a splash of color. Take some with and some without to see which you like best. Also, keep the Stetson, imho! ;)
My MIL sent us an absolutely ADORABLE black and white dress for my DD... this is seriously the cutest dress I have ever seen, and I have been wanting to have a family portrait done for a while... sooo I figured that it would be fun to put her in that dress... I have a black dress (with a white sash) that kinda matches the one for my DD... and I figured on having my fiance in a black shirt (and his black stetson. lol) ... I think that it would look nice, but he thinks it would be depressing for everyone to be in black and white. has anyone done it that way? How did your pics turn out? I don't want to put her in that and then have us in more colorful clothes. (im not a fanatic about everyone matching, but I want it to at least coordinate...) Also, I am not that great with hair and makeup, so if anyone who lives in the Round Rock/ Austin area knows of a (cheap) place to get it done... or can recommend a photographer... We rarely get portraits done, so when we do it's a big deal and I want it to look GOOD. TIA for your help!!!
thanks for the advice mommas! we won't be able to afford to buy more than one picture (multiple copies, but only one pose. lol) My aunt is into photography, so we do have plenty of candid park/casual setting photos that are great... I love them, but I also want a traditional family portrait (my aunt doesn't do so well with posed pics.) I love the idea of adding a color in! (also... the stetson is not an option. lol. we are both from Idaho, recently moved to texas, but we are a country and rodeo family... plus this is an "heirloom" hat, 3 generations old (still in very good condition) It's not just for looks, it's a lifestyle. lol!)

Black and white look really good in formal pictures.
You could ask a photographer for advice on the clothing color issue.
We used Tim Flanagan at Solas Gallery in Solado and the pictures were great. They have a beautiful wooded creek behind their studio with boulders and some really great natural backdrops.
My dad is a pro photographer. He says this is actually a very good idea. If the subjects are in subdued colors, the photo is more focused on the subjects rather than the clothes. Choose a pure white or black background for an ever more dramatic effect. Also, you can have the print done in sepia or black and white. If you have happy expressions on your faces, the photo will look happy. If you are serious, even if you are wearing bright colors, the photo will look depressing. Have fun!!!
My sister, her husband and baby daughter did exactly that (except casual; black shirts with blue jeans). It turned out adorable. I am sure your picture will turn out well too!
My sister just did the very same thing with her kids. The photographer recommended black and white. They turned out really good. I like Christines idea of a touch of color like a flower, you could even do a cute hat for her.
Our kids just had the cutest easter pictures taken and a friend of mine suggested changing it to sepia (black and white). I haven't sat down to do it yet but I think it would look good for our kids and for your family portrait too. I would do both styles.
I think all blacks, whites and greys would be cool. You can even have a b&w shpt with a O. small piece of white in her outfit/hair clip/whatever tinted....too cute! (I know you're from Texas, but I'd skip the Stetson--imho!)
Maybe just a touch of color like a flower held by the baby. Or a scarf. I love the idea it sounds great to me.
We had a professional Photographer (he was very good) tell us that group shots look the best when everyone is wearing simlar clothes (all white tops and khaki slacks or however you coordinate them) because the clothes fade out and the faces of the family pop out. Having said that, your daughter's dress will get lost in the shot. Talk to your photographer and see if you can do a single shot with her in her dress then do a group shot. Most photographers will allow a wardrobe change so let hubby choose one and you choose the other.
