We are thinking of going to Maui this summer with our kids (8 and 4) and are looking for recommendations for a great resort. Which one did you love and why? We definitely want to stay in the Kaanapali area and are looking for a place where we can have our own kitchen.
Waterslides or fun pool features a huge plus. :)
We didn't stay there, but were at the Westin in Kaanapali because we went to the kupanaha magic show which is in that hotel- it was fantastic and family friendly. The hotel looked really nice. We stayed up the way at the Ritz in Kapalua, which is amazingly nice, but not such a fun pool. We had a teenager when we went, so it was great for us, but I might have been disappointed if we had littler kids. Oh, and no kitchens anyway.
We honeymooned at The Westin, which was amazing (but no kitchen of course.) When we went back with the kids we stayed just a bit north, at Napili Bay. That's where all the family friendly beaches and condos/resorts are.
Go on Tripadvisor, you'll get hundreds of CURRENT reviews there, on this site you'll be lucky to get ten, if that.
And eat at Mama's Fish House! Best Mai Tai you ever had, amazing food and ambience, expensive but worth it.

Westin ocean villas. Rooms are spacious with full kitchen updated, it's like a condo but in a resort. There are plenty of pools one with water slide and pirate ship, on beach near all restsurants. We will be there next month
Check out the Honua Kai, it is very nice. We have never stayed there because our favorite is the Ritz Carlton in Kapalua but one of our favorite restraunts is near the Honua Kai so we are around there a few times every trip and it is beautiful with many pools and a water slide. We have looked at the condos on line and there are also very nice.
mahana resort kanapali but that was 8 years(almost 9) ago and i think it got new owners and a new name. we used expedia to find it
we had a kitchen and awesome view of the ocean.
whatever place your looking into read the reviews, alot of those places are full of roaches. our room was roach free but our rental car was full of them... (the carpet ran away when you opened the car door at night.)
Many many years ago we stayed at Embassy Suites. They have a huge breakfast and a cocktail hour. We had a little kitchen and a separate bedroom. It was very nice.
We were going to go there a few years ago but just couldn't swing the expense in the end due to the airfares. The place I found for our family was Honua Kai. It's a newer place in Kaanapali with a fun pool with waterslides for the kids. Check out vrbo.com because you can save a lot booking through the owners of the units. I really looked into a lot of places and this one was a great match for a family. Unfortunately, we never got to stay there, but it had good reviews and good prices.
It has been years since we were there. The last time we stayed at the Sheraton Resort in Kapula Bay and it was great.
We also stayed at a very nice Marriott resort in Kaanapoli as well.
I don't know about any condos, places with kitchens. We go the resort route. I never saw a water slide when we were there but things may have changed.
Lahania has a great luau on the beach.. get reservations early.
