Feeling like I'm the Devil

So...school is out again tomorrow. We did get hit hard by Irene, but not to justify three days of no school. A few are still without power, but crews are working around the clock, and I'm sure in the next 12 hours many more will get it back. We personally had no damage, and have been spending a lot of our "free" time helping family and friends who DID have damage. So a teacher friend of mine put on FB that there was no school tomorrow and I asked her if she knew why...I was ganged up on. Don't care too much, but am I being unreasonable to want to know why? A lot of other counties in MD are opening the schools they can. Why not our county? My husband had to take leave yesterday and I had to take it today. I just started a new job and tomorrow is his last day on his current job. I don't feel like I'm a horrible person for wanting to talk to the school to find out exactly why they keep cancelling. Maybe I'll take a drive after dinner and go further north to see if there is a lot worse damage in the other end of the county. (And just saying, safety comes first obviously. I just can't imagine that the school buildings are the only ones left in the county that have no power.)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks, moms. There is defintiely still some damage with downed trees, but from all accounts they are out of the way. But I have not been to the little backroads. I want everyone safe first, it just is very hard for working parents who's daycares were hit by the storm as well. Luckily my sitter will come to my house starting tomorrow - and next week we start with our nanny anyways. I do hope everyone gets their power back soon, I would just like to know why exactly they keep closing. I will call tomorrow...but like I said, I really do hope everyone has power back and everything gets back to normal! I'm ready for normal, as I'm sure others are :)!!

There could be damage to schools in the area and they want to wait until they are all ready. After Ike, our kids were out of school for almost 2 weeks. We were without power for 4 days but there were some in our neighborhood/area who were without for most of those 2 weeks. Just because you guys weren't hit too bad doesn't mean there isn't damage around.

It is a pain when you have to take time off that you can't really afford to take off. Sorry it's so hard on you.

MSmomto4 is right, my son didn't have school for two weeks but we didn't have power for 12 of those days. Here in Texas most of the school windows will not open so to have the kids in school without air conditioning is just unimaginable. Additional areas of Houston that were affected by Ike were further inland. Like our area, Spring. The Woodlands which is further north was hit hard as well. Could be you were just in the right area to not sustain as much damage. However, I understand your frustration!!! Its a pain in the buttocks!

I don't know the answer but I do know that when they cancel school here and I don't know why, usually the outside counties got more damage and they can't have the school open if all students can't make it or if the buses can't get to the children. I am sorry everyone jumped on you, that is so frustrating like you can't have a question or your own opinion then it sits with you for days. Maybe you can go back on the site and say, "sorry everyone misconstrued my question as negative, I was simply curious if there was something going on more than what I was aware of, I was asking in case there was anything I could do"....or something to that effect.

fIt sure is a pain when the kids get out so often anyway throughout the year and working parents have to find childcare for them.

It's probably the student population that is without power, not the school.

The other thing to consider is that resources may be slim in your area with other infrastructure problems and needs in your areas.. Also if they have not been stabilized.. it does not help to have schools in session and then have to release everybody, because the infrastructure fails because not everything has be resolved. .

There are lots of people needed to run each school and if you cannot have your whole staff, it is not practical to hold school.. Administrators, The bus drivers, the custodians, the building maintenance people. Fuel availability.. Not to mention the teachers who also have families they need to care for if their own communities are not fully functioning..
