My little girl will be 2 years old in 2 weeks. she has had 3 back to back colds with ear infections following each one since january. the first 3 colds she started with a temp of 99 then it went to 101 and as soon as it went to 101 the ear infection was revealed. she is on day 5 of fevers. the highest has been 102 but they have been ranging from 100-101.
i have taken her to the pediatrician twice and both times i was told her ears are clear.
her symptoms now are her nose is just starting to run and she has a slight post nasal drip like cough.
my ped told me if she still has fevers all thru day 5 then bring her in on day 6.
this is the longest amount of time she has ever had a fever.

could just a cold be causing a fever for 5 DAYS?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

We went to pediatrician today ( sunday) becasue Sat. evening her temp was 102 which made it 5 straight days of fevers. THANK GOD on sunday we had no temps. they did draw a CBC and blood cultures. the ped called me with cbc results and they were NORMAL. She still has a wet cough and nose is running. Ped said ears are OK so far, nothing she saw impressed her. Now it's a waiting game to make sure no ear infection surfaces. I have been doing steam in the bathroom/shower and saline nose spray for her. Please, please keep your fingers crossed , no ear infection this time. THANKS AGAIN

I have a 3 yr old and 2 yr old. My daughter went thru something similar when she was 1, and oddly enough, we never found out why she had been running a fever. I deffinatley recommend to take her back to the dr. because you never know. However, I often thought that possibly it was her teething. Teething can cause many types of discomforts in children. From fever to diahrrea, or nausea. Don't know if that helps, but I wish you luck in finding the problem. :)

It is really a pretty low grade fever...I am wondering if she might have allergies? I Would ask the doctor if there is something OTC that you can treat her with for allergies and see if that helps clear things up.
I am not saying that allergies can CAUSE ear infections...that is an entirely different matter...but the runny nose and post nasal drip can definitely be allergies. I spent years thinking that I was dealing with constant colds...but discovered a few years ago that it is actually allergies. A daily loratadine does wonders for me!!
This is the time of year for allergies...spring has sprung!!!

Is she acting sick? Usually, I just let the child guide me. If they are drowsy and crabby and obviously sick, I am more apt to be concerned. If my kids are running a low fever, but they are still playing and acting fine, then I'm more prone to wait it out and "see how it goes." Usually, their little bodies will eventually beat whatever germ is attacking them.

If your daughter is feeling very poorly and still running a fever, perhaps you could take her to a second pediatrician to get another opinion. If she's acting fine, I would just wait it out.

This has been a rough spring for illness, at least where I live. All of my kids have been uncharacteristically sick a lot this spring. Your daughter is probably just catching what's going around.

You may want to ask the doctor to test her white blood cell count, if it hasn't been done already.

My son is 26 months. He has been sick almost every other week since March. Last year, he had maybe one cold. I think it is a bad season. I dunno. Anyway, he just had a similar thing with the fever at Easter. He had a low grade fever for several days, and goopy eyes and a runny nose. He acted completely normal, a bit tired, but mostly normal. I took him to the pediatrician and was told it was just a virus. On the 5th day he woke up, and was just better. No gross eye and no fever. Maybe it's just a virus? I dunno, I understand feeling nervous cause its just going on and on...
Good luck!

Oh yeah... especially such a low grade fever... can easily go for 10 days.

At 2 however, I'd also be suspecting molar/teething fevers (101/102). Those can last for several months off and on.

It's always a good thing to get them checked out when they're persistent, or if your 'mommy-senses' start tingling... but in a healthy child, low grade fevers are really normal and almost never worrisome.

yes but maybe an earinfection too. A cold if I am not mistaken can cause a fever for 7-10 days. If I am wrong on this please someone tell her accurate.
