Moms- I need help!! My daughter just turned 7 months and I am looking for advice on introducing finger foods and what types.

I have a great fear of her choking but don't want to stub her development. She's been eating solids for months now and as of yesterday, has figured out how to crawl.

I plan on giving her a teething biscut (she doesn't have teeth yet) to start but after that, what else can I give her at this age? In a book, I read that you can give strips of bread, slices of cooked veggies, scrambled yokes. But what size do you cut it to and how do you know she's ready for that?? I don't want her to shove it all in her mouth and choke.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for taking the time to give your suggestions! I ran out and bought cheerios, gerber puffs, and a bunch of fruit and veggies. I gave her a puff and she was too funny. She kept putting it in her mouth and hanging her head down to try to spit it out, which was tough cause it kept sticking to her tongue and lips.. I will continue to give to her daily until she gets used to the texture and move on to chunky bits of fruit! Thanks all!

oooh, no teething biscuits. They can bite off chunks and choke. You should by the food net from Sassy. It is great. your baby is still really young for solid solid foods. Anything that will disolve in her mouth would be okay, like really cooked tiny pieces of carrots. Anything that has to be chewed is too early for right now. Wait a month or two and you can give her tiny pieces of cheese. One piece at a time. babies tend to stuff lots in there mouth if they get a chance. You can give her tiny pieces between bites of baby food. Just keep it tiny and mushy. This is just a time to introduce things to baby and for her to get a feed for solids. But she should primarily be on breastmilk or formula. Good luck and have fun. :) You will not stunt her development if you hold back on finger foods for awhile.

those teething biscuits are very hard and don't disolve easily I would stay away from them for awhile. those little rice puffs that gerber makes a great thing to start with. They disolve quickly so you don't have to fear about her choking. Sliced up bananas are also good to start with. If you are worried about her shovling food into her mouth only give her one piece on her tray at atime.

I agree with Racheal, I wouldnt give those biscuts either. I never gave them to my kids. The key is to give her little small things, a little at a time. You may find she will just explore the food first more than she will actually eat it. Give her the Gerber Puffs they are shaped like stars and they will disolve in the mouth, grilled cheese cut up tiny, tiny pasta shapes like Ditilini cooked in chicken broth, soft foods cut up small, cheerioes. If you are giving her the veggies I would cook them very soft. Have fun!!

My daughter loved (and still loves) chunks of tofu. Just buy firm or extra firm tofu and cut it into little bites. Tofu is mushy anyway so it doesn't take much to chew.
If you've never used tofu before, just make sure you store it in water after you open it, otherwise it will dry out and go bad. You should change the water daily to make sure it doesn't get slimy.
She was a big fan of egg yokes too.
You'll know she's ready if she eats it and has not problem. Just watch her and you'll be fine. If she doesn't seem interested, then wait a week or so and try again. She'll know when she's ready.

Around 8 months, I started my son with the usual Cheerios and Gerber Puffs -- they come in several flavors. I also gave him small bites of toast (I think it mushes better in the mouth without getting too globby like bread). Also, small chunks (no bigger than your pinkie fingernail) of ripe banana, avocado, peaches, pears, etc. work well. A great tip I found was to coat the fruit pieces in Cheerio dust or rice cereal. It's a little messy, but it really helps the baby pick up the bites better -- otherwise they're kind of slippery.

Definitely when you're starting out, put out one or two small pieces at a time. When she's mastered that, you can put down more. You get to control portions, at least until she starts storing food in her cheeks like a chipmunk. :) Have fun!
