Snip off any rough edges so it doesn't catch on anything.

Trim what you can, and put a bandaid over it to keep it from snagging and pulling off... it will fall off when it is ready.
Put a band-aid on it that let it do it thing,
Don't pull if off before it is ready. It will hurt.
Put a band-aid on it. Then, wrap tape around it and over it, so he cannot pull it off. Use Athletic tape or something etc.
I'd snip off the edges so they dont keep catching and rip off the rest of the way, that is what would hurt the most.
My husband loses at least one toenail every year when he goes backpacking up and down punishing mountains. Usually they're still partly attached when he returns home. We keep loose edges trimmed as close as possible to avoid snags on socks, and eventually the rest of the nail just comes off. If you pull a loose nail off prematurely, it exposes raw nerves in the nail bed to the air – painful!
My son lost ALL of his finger and toe nails last year because of hand foot and mouth (has has eczema so it went into the skin and made everything 20x worse). It was awful. It started getting white from the bottom up and some of them were pulling up but not ready to come off. I clipped what I could (but you need to be really careful) and I kept an eye on them and trimmed until it was ok to pull of without bleeding and hurting. I personally, would be afraid to put a bandaid on a baby's finger like that since they put fingers in their mouth. You don't want him getting it in his mouth.
