Fingernails - Murfreesboro,TN

My fingernails used to grow so well. They were long, strong and never split. I don't know what the deal is but for the last couple of months they peel and split and break so easily. I don't have any health problems that I know of and don't think my diet has changed that much. Has anyone else ever experienced this sort of problem.

What can I do next?

I used to be a hand model and always had weak nails and never used false nails. So here's a few things I learned:

Always wear rubber gloves while cleaning.
Don't use your nails as tools, use a butter knife to scrape off stuck on food, ect
Use lots of hand lotion and creams.
Twice a week put vaseline on hands and nails, get under nails put on cotton gloves and go to sleep (works great on feet too)
Only use nail polish remover once a week--and only non-acetone remover
Do a manicure weekly, I have always done my own nails and cuticles. If polish chips 'patch' the chip and top with clear.
Look into a nail strengthener called "Nail Magic" Sally's Beauty Supply carries it and I found it on on Walgreens.com but the shipping doubled the price.

Good luck I hope this helps.

You don't mention your age??

As we age, we absorb fewer nutrients from our foods and as women our need for calcium and protein increases....both which would affect the health of your nails.

So try the standards: good daily multi-vitamin (NOT centrum brands), jello's, increase calcium and protein.

If you haven't had a thorough medical exam in awhile, I suggest that you get one. Some health issues cause weak nails.
