Fish Sticks Too Greasy

Can anyone recommend battered/breaded fish sticks that are somewhat healthy, in particular that are not swimming in grease? My kids recently tried them and liked them, and they seem like such a great "emergency" or babysitter friendly meal. (We usually use chicken patties, but I was hoping to add fish for variety). But, I just can't feed them such greasy food. I even tried cooking them on top of a grill pan (with holes)to let the grease drain away from the fish and then blotting them with paper towels, but they were still overly greasy.

What can I do next?

I get tilapia, cod and haddock at Costco and I stay away from the breaded / battered stuff. I put the fish in a glass pan, add a little lemon juice, sprinkle with a little garlic powered, salt pepper, and just a few pats of butter on top, then cover it with saran wrap and micro wave it for 15 or 20 min until the fish is flaky and done. My family loves it and always asks for more.

I believe its Van De Kamps that makes a lower calorie version of sorts, its a square pattie thats breaded and tastes good. Look for it near the fish sticks and you should find it.

That would be a 'no'...

In 'Eat This, Not That' there are no breaded fish sticks listed... but why limit yourself to breaded fish? Grilled fillets are just as quick and easy to make, but have 100 calories and 3grams of fat in a 108gram portion, compared to 160 calories and 7 grams of fat in a 76 gram portion.

Yes, you read that right: More than double the amount of fat in 75% of the amount of food. Yikes. Gortons is one brand of frozen grilled fish.

There are also quick salmon burgers, at 110 cal for 3g fat in 91 grams of food.

While we're there: frozen chicken patties are not a healthy choice by any stretch of the imagination. 170 calories for 113 grams of food with ELEVEN grams of fat each?!? Even if they don't look greasy when they're cooked, they're wall-to-wall fat.

Check out this site for additional calorie/fat information (I have no affiliation with this site, I just found it while looking this stuff up)

Just feed them real fish. I buy bags of frozen Tilapia white fish on sale at Meijers all the time. You can thaw them in the fridge all day or in a sink full of warm water for about 15mins. Spray with alittle olive oil, sprinkle with dill and a spritz of lemon, bake at 425 for 15mins. From frozen to table only takes about 30min and they are good and healthy, low in fat and high in protein. I encourage people to introduce "real" fish to their kids while they are still young instead of "kid" type foods like nuggets and fish sticks that are ALL unhealthy. Homemade shake and bake fish might be a healthier option to.

Trader Joes makes a frozen fish stick that is made with real fish. It is not greasy at all, and is made with all real ingredients. My son was introduced to fish this way, and loves all fish now (he is 3 1/2). He will eat Tilapia and Salmon...and he actually loves them more than the sticks...but it sounds like you are looking for a quick meal, then the Trader Joes ones are the way to go!!!

try to buy the fish made from whole fish fillets, not the minced stuff. I think those are less greasy.

My kids love fishsticks too. Boys 15,11,8. I bake them in the oven and don't find them greasy at all. I use just the Great Value brand at Walmart, nothing special. I do use the fish "Sticks" not the fillets though. Yes it is a great food to have for babysitter night. Good Luck!
