Flonase and 3 1/2 Year Old

My son was just prescribed Flonase. My concerns are that, from what I've seen, it's not recommended for children under 4. Has anyone used this for a child under 4? My son stays congested and has trouble sleeping. We are having a sleep study done, but this doctor has prescribed this and he's not his pediatrician.

What can I do next?

Hi LouAnn,

Steroid medications can not only affect growth but can cause osteoporosis. I personally don't believe ANYONE should use steroids unless there is a life threatening issue. I was on them for 6 years as a teenager, not knowing any better, and they have caused havoc in my body. I have reversed a lot of the damage but it's been a long road.

There are other ways to combat congestion. Congestion is simply the body's way to protect itself against foreign stimuli....most problems stem from the abundance of synthetic chemicals in our world today. I would highly recommend detoxing your home. It is simple and can be inexpensive and your little one...and you....will feel better. In the meantime, elderberry extract is tasty and will help build his immune system so his body can do the fighting like it's supposed to. Echinacea is good too but is ineffective with sugar in the diet and most three years olds can't go cold turkey on sugar. I can recommend a children's vitamin as well. Most on the market (the flintstone type) do more harm than good.

God bless,
M.

My son used it for a while when he was late 3ish. He has seasonal allergies plus he is allergic to mold so when it rains he really feels it. But he said it started giving him a sore throat. But that is just him. It definitely relieved his congestion though and he is congested a lot and add ADHD sleep issues on top of that. His dr then prescribed Claritin (then prescription) and then Zyrtec (also then prescription) when Claritin stopped working. If it works I say go for it. You'll know pretty quickly how he will react to it. Also, we only gave the one spray and only during allergy season or a lot of rain. Also, the steriod in this med is low dose, not the dosing of steroids athletes use (but obviously shouldn't). It won't affect his growth. Good luck with your decision.

Jillian S has some great points. Definitely contact the specialist & your pediatrician to get the answers you are looking for. If you still aren't comfortable with what they have to say, don't use it. Do you know why your son is always congested? Does he have allergies or asthma or are there other reasons? Did you know there are harmful and dangerous chemicals in household products you may be using that could cause these symptoms? I would love to share some information with you to help you get those chemicals out of your home. Please let me know if you have any questions. Best of luck to ya! Hope your little guy gets some relief soon!

Don't use it if you are not comfortable with that.
Go to HIS Pediatrician.
Get a 2nd opinion.

I and my family members have used Flonase. But we are adults. If it is NOT recommended for children under 4 years old, then don't use it.

Go with your gut instinct.

There are always other things to use besides that, that WILL be suitable for very young children.

All the best,
Susan

Sometimes Doctors prescribe medication off-label or adjust dosing for children., if nec. Is he a specialists referred to you by your pediatrician? Has he used this product before on children with sleep disorders and why? Ask him or your Ped, but this is not abnomral for a doctor to do with a medication.
