So What Happened?

Thank you everyone. This is actually for my boyfriend. He has been with the same company for 8 years & due to the economy was laid off. We filed online today, so we'll see what happens. Sharie, the FCAT went well, just waiting on the results. How did your daughter do? Maybe we can meet each other one day.

Just google Florida unemployment. Most of it can be done online and there usually are FAQs.

My hubby had to file for 3 weeks. Everything is done online. There are phone numbers you can call if you have questions or you can go to your local Work source office. You'll have to file every two weeks and have to claim that you had 5 job contacts (who, date, what type-interview, resume) each week when you file so keep a log book. I don't know if they offer debit card as he did direct deposit. I helped him when he filed because it was kinda confusing at first but we probably would have gotten the hand of it if we would have had to do it longer.

You should be able to at least start the process online. It may require some phone calls too. They'll need a little time to look up your past wages earned in Florida, so it's not an immediate thing. Each state does it a little differently. You may or may not be paid for your first week after contacting them. If you were fired or quit, you may need an investigation to see if you meet the state's qualifications for receiving unemployment. Read all the paperwork they send you!! It's the best way to understand the system. I worked for the WI unemployment system; it takes 3 years there of full-time work, to get a good handle on the easier issues in unemployment. So don't feel bad if you don't understand. You have every right to ask questions :)

You should be able to do it online. IF you go to the Florida Unemployment Website, there should be instructions..
Also, they no longer send out check but instead, give you a debit card for which they credit each month.
Again, it's pretty well explained on the unemployment website

Good luck

Some advice - most unemployment offices no longer mail checks and require you to have your benefits direct deposited or you can be issued a special debit card - DO NOT GET A DEBIT CARD!!!!!!, unless absolutely necessary. There are usually lots of fees associated with this.
