How do I find a family / home for a dear friend to place her dog with that will be like a rescue situation.
She can not care for the animal anymore.... the animal has a lot of skin/allergy issues and wears a cone
on her head night and day to manage the problem....w/o the cone, she wants to chew her hot spots and make them
raw.....and she feels she has done all she can but my friend can not fix the issue with this dog.
She has been tested to a degree and can't find allergey with it. It is a lasopso. (sp?)
She feels that maybe someone else can help rehabilitate this dog in a private situation and not a shelter.
She has had the dog for 7 years and will be very emotional for her to let her go...but it is best for the dog
so that someone can help her with these problems.....

What can I do next?

California is an awfully big state....so WHERE in Northern California??

You can help her by finding out what is wrong with the dog. A rescue organization, in a situation like this, will want to see the vet records and most likely talk to the vet as well.

Rehabilitate? The dog needs a lot of testing to find out what's wrong with her. No one will foster a dog where they don't know the conditions.

Here's the link for the Lhaso Apso Rescue foundation.

Have your friend contact them and find out what's going on and how to help the dog.

Good luck!

I hope your friend has exhausted all the treatment options - I don't know what she thinks another family can do that she cannot. Re-homing is traumatic for a dog. I have a rescue dog from the human society who had PTSD as a result of being given up twice. She also had skin issues and hair loss but we turned that around without medication, using natural means and anti-inflammatories that help immunity. We did it without ever determining the cause of the problem - so much easier than all that testing.

I think your friend should talk to her vet about publicizing the need for a new home, look for a Lhasa Apso rescue group, and talk to the local ASPCA or Humane Society to see if they will help rehome the dog without actually making it live in the shelter first. Maybe they can evaluated the dog and then try to find a new owner who will come to your friend to make the exchange. But this is the least desirable option. Most people won't want a sick dog unless they have rehabilitation skills and patience as well as sufficient money to afford it.

I'd talk to the vet. Our vet took one of my father in laws dogs because he couldn't handle it anymore. They took good care of it and placed it with a family that really wanted it. The vet was also able to manage the physical issues with the dog and when it found a new home it was healthier.

Google dog rescue organizations. She can also post on veterinarians' bulletin boards and/or put an ad in the paper. I doubt that anyone will take him. Why would someone else know how to treat him? If she hasn't taKen him to vet that should be the next step.

One of my friends had to rehome her older dog who was incontinent sometimes. I called numerous rescue organization. She talked with a women who worked at county animal control. I couldn't find anyone who would take him. My brother took him until my friend was able to take him back. After 2 years the dog is still active and is now continent. It was the stress of living in an uncertain environment.

My mother's dog had a problem similar to your friend's dog. The vet gave her medicine to apply on his skin. I think she tried 2-3 different ones before finding one that worked.
My mother thought stress contributed to the problem. Could your friend simplify the dog's life?
