Hi, Moms!
I had such a big response on my last post & just knew you would have some good advice for me with this "trivial" topic!
My three-year-old daughter has long hair with loose curls. Lately, it's getting very frizzy. I'm not ready to cut her hair yet because I LOVE the curls. I use Burt's Bees Baby Wash & have tried several conditioners. I only wash her hair (at most) twice a week unless she's been outside & sweaty :). Do you have any suggestions about products I could use to try & help eliminate the frizz?
Thanks!
M. R.

Hey M.,
My son too had gorgeous curly hair that I absolutely didn't want to cut! I didn't like the idea of using a product in his hair at such a young age (1 and 2). I just scruched in a tiny bit of lotion (just whatever was left over on my hand after I had applied it to myself)! It can be super easy to turn the hair greasy if you use too much, but a little bit helped keep the curls together nicely.
I have a grandaughter with very curly hair, her aunt, my other daughter, told them not to use shampoo, just conditioner to wash her hair, it has really helped.
Shampooing your hair daily isn't what dries it out, it's usually the water that is the culprit. Just use a good conditioner, I personally only use Arbonne products, but I also get a great discount...I do recommend John Frieda's Anti frizz serum, also love the one that Avon consultants sell...cann't think of the name, but it's a wonderful rub in serum. The humidity can be a big problem, I straighten my hair and did last night around 9pm then at 1030 went outside to watch the meteors....after 30 min had to straighten it again....curls and frizz galore! Hope this helps and good luck!
Probably this winter when the humidity is back down, it'll be more manageable, just naturally.
I do not have daughters but for my Frizzy hair I use a product in the Dove line of hair care. It is a small pump bottle for Frizzy hair. I have also found using a regular shampoo does not help with the Frizz. If I buy a shampoo and conditioner that is made specifically for frizzy hair it works better. It is more in cost but the one I like is in the pantene line. Wal-mart used to have there brand of it that worked well. The last time I went to buy it I could not find it, but I was looking for the one that is a 2in1. The separate ones seem to work better. Good Luck.
my daughter has this problem and during the winter i use i think its the garneir stuff in a green tub and blow dry till damp and let it finish ari drying during the summer i use the herbal essents in the purple bottle and let it air dry
I hate my frizzy hair. I use a leave in conditioner called Cowboy Magic. It's difficult to find in retail stores, but a lot of tack shops (equestrian store)sell it. It works really well on horse hair and used to keep it nice and neat during dressage competitions.
I have natural curly hair and battled with it all my life, LOL. Being a child of the 70's where straight hair was in didn't help.
Are you brushing her hair? I know it sounds silly but naturally curly hair shouldn't be brushed, it should be picked with a pick. Wash it, if needed use a spray on detangler, and then pick it and let it dry on its own.
I was mine with Redken Fresh Curls shampoo and conditioner. It seems expensive, but trust me it lasts a long time. Then I put it in a towel for a few minutes, pick it and leave it for about 1/2 hour. Then I spray it all over with Garnier Fruictis Curl Shaping Spray and kind of fluff it up with my fingers as it dries.
I hope that helps. My best friend has a 4yo daughter with long beautiful curly hair and she was having the same issue. Her hair dresser told her the same thing, stop brushing and start using a pick.
Enjoy those curls.
Also one last thing, blow drying will most likely make it frizzier. I know it doesn't make sense but it makes my hair huge, LOL. You can use a diffuser and that helps or get one of those portable hair dryers you sit under. Last guy that did my hair for my daughters wedding used that & said you can buy them at Beauty Supply stores. It worked great.
Try silk therapy that really works for me. and it wont damage her hair!
If you feel you can use adult products on her, try the Biolage products by Matrix. I use the ultra hydrating products. Shampoo with their ultra hydrating shampoo and then use the conditioning balm. Leave it on for at least 3 minutes to help condition. You may want to try just the conditioner. You can get these at any hair salon but JC Penney carries it and sometimes has a sale on them. Some of their products are available in the drugstores but some are only at the salons. Also I have used a Melaleuca product, Envia, that is what they call a conditioning hair masque. I also leave that on for at least 3 minutes. That is a non-toxic product so if you are unsure of the Biolage, this is a good option. You may want to try some sort of a 'leave in conditioner' as well. If she is in a pool a lot over the summer, as well as in the sun, that will dry out hair. Good luck.
It very well could be the water and not the product or lack of that is causeing the frizz... I have recently discovered that when I wash my hair at home, I get straw like texture hair, but if I wash at the gym, my hair is silky smooth... solution: buy an attachment to your shower head at a big box home store that filtures out the chlorine... leaves you skin feeling much smoother too!
A lot of our frizzy hair issues went away when we got a water softener in our home.
Also, we wash our hair every other day. We let is air dry from a pretty wet start. Sometimes I use a frizease product on my hair. My daughter gets pretty golden ringlets but we just can't use a brush, ever.
In the winter I use a good ionizing ceramic hair blow drier. That makes a huge difference compared to a regular drier. I can't go back.
EDIT: I wanted to add the the daily shampooing DOES dry out your hair despite what others may say because shampooing daily means you are stripping the natural oils that the scalp produces. These oils are essential to healthy hair! You mentioned using burts bees so thats better that most commercial shampoos that contain alcohol (which dries out hair and skin!)
Keep shampooing to a minimum because shampoo (even nourishing ones) tend to dry out hair. Don't wash her hair any more often than every other day, at most.
Use a leave in conditioner, like Infusium 23 Moisturizing Formula. Use it after shampooing. You can also use a little to tame the frizzies when they pop up - either alone or mix with water, rub your hands together and apply to her hair.
You can also try a ant-frizz serum like Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine Weightless Anti Frizz Serum. John Frieda also has a great anti-frizz serum. It doesnt take very much of either product.
If you don't like using products like these, you can probably find something similar in an all natural line, but I don't have any suggestions on that.
Good luck! Frizzies are such a nuisance!
