We are in the market for a new washer/dryer. Anyone have any brands/models that they recommend? Thanks!

And as a followup, do you prefer it to a top loader?

I have had the GE high-efficiency front loaders for two years now and I would highly recommend them. I haven't had a single problem with them and I do at least one load per day, most often two to three. Just remember with front loaders that you need to leave the washer door cracked open between loads to avoid mildew growth. If you forget though, you can run a "basket clean" cycle with vinegar instead of bleach and it'll get the smell out.

I have the Whirlpool Cabrio. I have had it 4 years and the repair man has been out at least that many times already and I have to call him again tomorrow.
Would I buy another? No

Can I 'un-recommend' ANY Frigidaire front loading washer/dryer? We've had ours since November and have already had all sorts of problems. They're all still under warranty, but I'd rather have a washer/dryer that work consistently than ones that can be fixed for free consistently :)

Love my Whirlpool Duet set! No more washing clothes by hand. Fits a lot more clothes than a top loader. And it is much gentler on clothes than a top loader. The one problem I did have was a musty, mildew smell for a while. But I figured out that the gasket area is just big enough to collect tiny little socks and let them get mildewy. Now I check the gasket after every load to make sure nothing is trapped there. Also as several others mentioned, always leave the door open when not in use so the interior will dry. Oh, and I've owned my set for about 3 years.

I just wanted to say how that I always see ppl complain of a musty smell in their front loaders. I have a tradional top-loading washing machine and it has that same musty smell as well. I dont know that much about front loaders, but I have to deal with the musty/moldy smell in my top-loader too.

we have the LG steam one and I LOVE it but it takes a LONG time to wash clothes, especially when i use sanitaize and heavy load and pre wash and extra rinse it is almost 2 hours but my clothes look good after many many washes and it is quiet and lots of good points

We bought the Whirlpool Duet front loader and dryer five years ago. First the gasket ripped and cost $300 to fix because it was just out of warranty. Then the mold started. I took off the front to find gross black gunk in a discharge hose. The clothes never smelled clean and the super-hot water cycle never seemed hot--as if something else had broken. I called the company because of health issues with mold; we just couldn't have this situation. They gave me $500 for the machine (that cost closer to $900). So I think they were fair with some pressure, but I would never buy a front loader again.

We are actually looking as well. It is between the Kenmore brand and the Whirlpool Duet. What did you end up purchasing?

We've had the LG True Balance Washer and LG Sensor Dryer (stackable) for about 6 weeks, and I must say I never felt so great about a purchase. I love the fact that they're both HUGE on the inside, but run efficiently, and don't take up a ton of space. The only thing that would make me love them more is if we got them in a really cool color, but those were $300 extra at the time, and since they are in a laundry room, I figured it wasn't worth it. But these machines are awesome, and make my life easier:-)

I have an LG Tromm set, and I LOVE them! I especially like that I can stack them and save space.
And like another mom said, remember to leave the washer door open when you're not using it so it can dry properly and avoid mildew.

We have the LG Steam washer and dryer, we just love them!! Just remember to leave the washer door and soap drawer open to dry out after use or you will get a moldly smell.

I've had a samsung front loader washer and dryer for about a year. I love it! We run ours on our propane take, rather than electricity. It doesn't get the clothes as hot when drying.
I love the different settings: whites, bedding, heavy, sanitize (for babies cloth diapers).
Good luck on your search

We bought the front loaders 2 yrs ago and I am not sure that I would buy it again. The wash machine after the 1st yr has a mildew spell to it. I bought online the tablets that GE suggested, but it does not help. I have cleaned the seals, rim, etc.

If I had to do it over gain, I would have gone with the traditional top loader. One the positive side, the front loads hold more.

Best of luck to you!
