So What Happened?

I want to know if it was as wonderful as the stage show, or if it was a disappointment.

I saw it! I liked it. Anne Hathaway was amazing as Fantine. (I will say that she was by far the best part of the film.) I'm a total Les Miz geek. I've seen the stage production three times, have the Complete Symphonic cast recording totally memorized, read the (unabridged!) book. I don't know about "as wonderful as the stage show" because it's hard to compare two such different media, but it was pretty good. As far as movie musicals go, it's not quite on par with, say, classics like "Sound of Music" or "My Fair Lady," but it's definitely better than almost all the recent ones I can think of.

My daughter and I are going this weekend - we both love the book, have read it multiple times, and the cast is phenomenal, so I can't imagine not liking the movie.
When I asked my daughter if she wanted to come with me, she asked me whio was in the cast, and I started listing them for her, "Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean, Russell Crowe as Javert, Ann Hathaway as Fantine, Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter as the Thenardier's..." She cut me off and said, "You had me at Hugh Jackman."

I took her to see the Liam Neeson/Geoffrey Rush one years ago, and while the two of them were wonderful, Uma Thurman was just awful as Fantine.

I'm seeing it Friday with my mom and sister and I'm so excited!!!

We had to watch the original Les Miserables with Liam Neesen in class when I was a senior (It was either for English or History) and I fell in love with the movie. I'm really excited to see if this version is as good as the original.

Yes our daughter and I saw it yesterday. We loved it..

We both agreed that Russell Crowe looked scared to death in the beginning, but got better, but poor dear, with all of the actors being actual Broadway stars.. It was obvious, he was a bit out of his league.

So many stand out moments.

We have been keeping up with the production, so we were really excited to see actual singing and performing..

I'm interested to see Russell Crowe as Javert. :)

I've seen this as a play, read the book twice (once as a 9th grader, once in my 20s), saw the 70s TV movie, the 98 movie with Liam Neeson, saw the PBS musical last year (or this year?) and will see this one in theater in the next couple weeks. What questions do you mean? Are you wondering about review type questions, comparisons, philosophical/political/moral questions? What are you looking for here? :)

My family saw it yesterday. It was fantastic. They should just hand Anne Hathaway the Oscar now for best supporting actress. I had read a lot of critics say that and thought - how standout can a performance possibly be. And then I saw the movie and understood.

I have seen Les Mis on broadway over a dozen times. I've watched the specials on PBS and seen the previous movies. I thought it was more wonderful. Yes in general the broadway performances had slightly better singers (though Marius, Fantine, and Eponine were definitely broadway caliber) it was the acting to go along with it that really took it up a notch. The actors just brought so much emotion to the screen. At the broadway performances, I would always cry at the end. The movie got me crying at least 4-5 times in addition to the end.
