Hi Moms,

Does anyone have any experience with a ganglion cyst on the wrist? My son has one on the top of his wrist. I haven't taken hi to the Dr yet, but a nurse friend confirmed that is what it is and from reading about them online were pretty sure that is what it is. He's had it 1-2 years, but it has been really small until recently. He started playing drums this year and I think that is aggravating it.

My pediatrician said we need to go to orthopedic doctor, but I called an emergency clinic we go to when needed and they said if they confirm it is a ganglion cyst they can drain there. I'm asking the question because he only has major medical currently due to my husbands job loss so while I want the best care I also need it to be less expensive than surgery.

So I guess my question is have you or your children ever had one drained or surgically removed? Did it come back? Side effects? Is there a recovery with just draining?

Any advice is appreciated as we are going to get it looked at next week after football season!

TIA!!

What can I do next?

I have one that comes and goes, depending on how much weight I put on it. It does not cause me pain, and I've never needed medical attention for it. I've probably had it about 5 years. My doc told me to leave it alone if it's not causing any problems. (and you will see some home remedies suggesting slamming a heavy book on it, but don't try that!)

yeah you can get it drained, then ask them to give him a cortizone shot that may nip it in the bud for awhile. it will be painful even if they numb it, but it does help alot. can he wear a wrist gaurd (sp) while drumming? it may help for the aggravation after you get it drained. gl

I've had one of those before. It came up when I started doing yoga and put a lot of weight on my wrists. I stopped exerting the extra pressure and it subsided on its own. From what I've read, you can drain them, but they might come back. An orthopedic specialist may not recommend surgery but he may have some really good ideas on how to minimize the effects of the drum playing and maybe some home resources for helping alleviate any future irritation of the cyst. Our son recently broke his leg (he's 3) and the orthopedic we've been seeing is Dr. Christopher Vara with Cook Childrens in downtown Fort Worth - he's very professional, very thorough, and also very nice.

My husband had one removed surgically last year. His Dr said they could drain it but in their experience when drained they come right back. So they suggested surgery.

If you don't have the money, I would say you could try to get it drained and see how long that would last.

I heard they aren't really dangerous but can cause pain. My husband had his for many, many months before finally doing something about his.

My husband had one, and saw a specialist. They recommended surgery, but my husband kept putting it off, and it eventually went away. It flared up again recently, but seems like it goes away on its own. Sorry I'm not more help!

I had a really large one on my right wrist when I was 18. Aspirating it twice did no good, it kept coming back. I was waiting tables at the time and playing tennis and it hurt quite a bit. I had surgery to remove it and it hasn't come back in 27 years.
