my boyfriends youngest daughter has the same thing. it supposed to go away as they get older. nothing to worry about
Has anyone ever heard of a geographical tongue? I was recently told by my son's pediatrician that he has one. She mentioned that it was not going to cause any problems it's just the way it looks. It has slightly discolored spots on it and it doesn't have a funny shape or anything. It definetly doesn't bother him and I was just curious if anyone else has heard of it. Thanks.

Yeah, I have it and my father has it. It doesn't really cause any problems. However, I think it's a sign that your son could have other skin problems in the future like eczema or skin sensitivities. Sometimes, if it's acting up, I notice that my tongue can be sensitive to really spicy food or acidic food like pineapple. Other than that, it's cosmetic.
J.- I also have a geographical tongue. Have known since I was a kid and now I am close to 40. Like your pediatrician says, "there is nothing wrong". The appearance on the surface is the only different part. No problems ever with taste buds or language issues. I don't recall if it is hereditary but out of the five girls in my family, 2 of us have it. Other kids thought it was either "cool or gross". You can be thankful if that is the only irregularity your little one is found to have at the Drs.

My husband has it as well. For the most part it does not bother him, but like PP said, it can change shapes/location and when that happens his tongue is pretty sore for a few days.
Hi J., I have one!! So does my father and g- mother. It def is nothing to worry about. Mine does not really show up much, where my fathers is really grosse all of the time. But you can't see it unless he sticks it out. Which he used to do when we were kids. Mine actually came out when i was prego with my daughter. It was sooo bad, and for the first and only time it was somewhat painful. I could not eat anything citris. So needless to say it is completely fine. It is to my knowledge somewhat hereditary. Hope this helps.
My daughter has one too. She's now 14, but we first noticed it & asked her pedi when she was about 2.5. It's nothing to worry about & you can't always see the patterns on the tongue. It will change from time to time too, just so you know before you notice it.
i have it too...they discovered it in high school. no one has ever heard of it when i tell them about it so it's nice to know i'm not the only one....and i'm sure its nice to know your son isn't alone! sometimes when the spots "move" my tongue is sore for a few days but generally it doesn't bother me. :)
Hi My sister has had one since she was about 3 she is 33 now and it never bothered her. The only thing is that certain fruit bothers it sometimes. Pineapple, sometimes apples. She is picky on what she puts on her tongue because the way it feels sometimes grosses her out lol.
