Hi Moms,

My son (age 6) loves science type things. He's into volcanos and geysers, etc. I'm thinking Yosimite might be a nice vacation for him, but was wondering if there was anything like that a little closer as getting TO Yosimite looks to be rather long by car or plane.

Any ideas for a geological vacation of "active" geology within a reasonable distance? Thanks!

OOPS - I got my "Y" parks confused!

I know it out of your realm but we went to Iceland in 2010 and they have an active geysir. It's old school too-you can go right up to them and actually get wet-not like Yellowstone-where you can only see from a distance. The whole area and the majority of swimming areas are geothermal. Very cool trip.

Nothing active, sorry. But have you been to look at the dinasour tracks at Glen Rose? Not exactly exciting but but a good outdoor day. Take the bikes, picnic. Oct is our best month, weather wise.

Yellowstone is the place to be if you want to see geysers. If you every plan a trip, make sure to check out the young scientist program. For a small fee, kids get to check out laser thermometers to see how hot the geysers and hot springs are. It's really cool.

Unfortunately, there isn't anything like that near FW. IF you want to take a little trip, Enchanted rock is a nice hike. It's near Llano, about four hours away. Inner Space Caverns near Austin might be worth looking into. ANd Longhorn Cavern may be neat too (I have never been).

Most of the geysers here are in Yellowstone. There aren't any in Yosemite. Here is a list of geysers. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_geysers

Have you looked into Big Bend national park here in Texas? It's not "active," but we enjoyed it. You won't find much active geology outside of Yellowstone.

ETA: What do you consider active? There are lots of parks with waterfalls and really great rivers.

Natural Bridge Caverns are really cool, too, and they're in Texas (as long as we're talking caverns).

Yellowstone is AMAZING! Go! You will love it. If you stay outside the south entrance, there are these cute little cabins technically not a part of the park, but they have kitchenettes and are like a hotel room, but cabins. We tent camp . . . but those cabins. Adorable.
The rangers give this great talk about geysers outside of old faithful and the kids can become jr rangers (my oldest did and is so proud!) you will want to spend at least four days in the park to fully explore when you go.
Ah. I loved our Yellowstone vaca!
