So, we try really hard to elliminate plastics as much as possible, but obviously you can't do it completely. So, we try to make sure that the plastics we use are safe plastics. I've done a lot of research to find which companies are BPA and Phthalate free, we aslo heard about plastics being made from corn and potaoes and things of that nature....bio-plastics they're called. Anyways, the other day I was making a salad and we usually buy the salad that comes in plastic containers but it say on the front that with made with corn. But to my amazement when I eptied it out teh other day I saw that the number on the container was 7! And any of you who know anything about the plastic issue is that 7 is the worst kind! 3, 6, and 7....7 being the worst. Anyways, to say the least I'm very confused, beause I thought the bio-plastics were okay. If anyone has any knowledge on this issue I would love to hear it. I know I can just buy heads of romain lettuce, thats not the issue. I would just really like to be able to better understand bio-plastic, whats good and whats bad. Thank you! Have a great day!

What can I do next?

http://www.ewg.org/ is a wonderful place to learn about all sorts of environmental issues.

It is fairly easy to remove almost all plastic from the kitchen. I have been cooking and reheating foods in only metals (stovetop) or glass (microwave and refrigeration) for 20 years. Avoid non-stick coatings (teflon), which gives off seriously toxic fumes if overheated. Stainless steel water bottles can be found pretty easily, and help avoid the heaps of water bottles that end up in landfills.

You can find sturdy, break-resistant glassware for toddlers to drink from at http://www.montessoriservices.com/store/index.php?main_pa..., or even at your local thrift store. And of course glass baby bottles are still available.

Trying to figure out plastic has been pretty difficult for me too. I agree that it is hard to eliminate it completely. Unfortunately, I don't know much about bio-plastics, but I do know what 'eco-friendly', 'green' and 'natural' are a huge trend right now...so I try to be aware of that when I'm shopping. I think that it's great that more people and companies are 'going green', but there are also companies trying to cash in without doing all of the work. My guess is that they added minimal corn to the container and they didn't eliminate any of the other toxins from it...but still made sure to have a lable about the corn on the front to sell their product.
Thanks for sharing...if I see something similar, I will look at the number before buying. :)

Hi R.,

I don't know if this will help you any, but I read this article last week: http://www.lifescript.com/channels/healthy_living/Health_...

This website is one of their links on the bottom of the article: http://www.idealbite.com/tiplibrary/archives/bottled_up1

I read that 7 was the really bad one, so I checked all the cabinets and didn't find any 7s, but kind of worried here because some of my plastics didn't even have numbers....wonder what *those* are made of!?

I'm going to replace my plastic mixing bowls(no number), and all the other plastics(our drinking cups) in the kitchen really soon.

Not having any luck in searching anywhere else, but will post it if/when I come across it.

check out EWG.org. it is by far the best resource for understanding all the toxic exposures we have to deal with.

Since I am newly pregnant, I've been reading up on this BPA stuff here is a really great website I try to share with everyone it's the best one article wise I've found. The first article is about baby bottles but if you look to the left there are lots of other articles as well that explain in great, but simple words for us, detail.
