Government Shutdown

I m wondering if any of you have family in the military and what they have been told about the shutdown? Or if any of you had family in the military when this happened before? My husband is the chiropractor for the Navy and they have told him that the soliders and all of the contractors will not be getting a paycheck until the gov re-opens, if they shutdown. They will get back pay (not the contractors, they get nothing). Has anyone else heard this? Two of my facebook friends are saying yes, their husbands have been told the same thing.

Thanks, I am just scared to death because I am at stay at home mom and so if this happens I don't know what we are going to do. It would figure that the first time I haven't worked full time since I was sixteen this would happen. Praying it doesn't.

Christine,
He is a contracted Chiropractor for the Navy. Right now I can not say definitively whether or not he will be paid because there is no "official stance" yet. That is why I was asking if anyone had been through this before. Oh and for the savings thing, we actually did have a cushion, then we found out our accountant made a mistake in figuring our taxes for the year. So when we thought we had been paying extra we weren't paying enough. Stupid us went ahead and paid the IRS their money, guess we should have waited till they shutdown.

What can I do next?

That's generally the way a government shut down works. Full time employees can either take leave or they don't get paid for the days the government is shut down. Contractors don't get paid. When the government opens back up, sometimes they pay employees for the days off, sometimes they don't. It depends on what's in the Congressional bill to fund government operations (and that hasn't been voted on yet, so no one knows).

But don't freak out... practically every year there's a threat of a government shutdown, and the last time we had one was YEARS ago.

Sorry don't have any info for you, but I'm with mamatothreewee. I find it absolutely absurd for the polititions who are constantly taking pay raises, paid vacation, and whatever bribes that they so happen to take, to make the actual hard workers of the government to not take pay. They should decrease their pay. They don't need to drive the fanciest car, or have a private jet! They should probably work free for a month! Anywho. . .of my apple box.

From what I've heard and read, it appears that Congress may be coming to an agreement. Neither side wants a government shutdown especially given the situation we are currently in.

I am a civilian employee for the Finance office at an Air Force Base. The official word for right now is that no decisions have been made. Period. They will not go into further details until a definite decision has been made. The budget (or lack thereof) was extended 60 days past the initial cut-off to try and buy some time for signatures.

The last time was in 1993 and ALL of the employees were reimbursed back pay.

My husband is former active duty Marine Corps and now works as a contractor on a Navy base and he hasn't said anything about it. Not that we will stress paying our bills because we've got money tucked away in the bank if we have to use it. I think is sucks if it goes through because all the politicians from the little man (mayor) all the way up to the top (President) should have to make some sort of financial sacrifice in order to help out our schools and everything else! But I guess this is why we've always put money away after bills were paid each paycheck because we all know active duty doesn't get paid very much and most are a 1 income family because child care is so expensive and you never know when your husband is going to deploy!

I just wish us all good luck if we are affected by this!

I would suggest calling your local Navy Marine Corps Relief Society. They won't be able to tell you what will happen if a shutdown occurs but they can tell you about different programs that they offer which can help in times of financial need.

I am active duty military and have been told nothing. I am stationed at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, Tx and no one I work with is concerned. The government has said this in the past as well, with nothing ever being acted upon. I am not worried. We are the last people who's pay should be stopped.

J.,

I don't get it. Is your husband in the Navy or in private practice? I am assuming your concern is that he won't have any patients because his patients won't have paychecks? Federal employees will get backpay if there is a shut down. Contractors will be on leave and not get any backpay (basically an unpaid leave).

By the way, regardless of which status your husband is...you should have a minimum of 3-6 months of your expenses saved for emergencies in an account that is pretty liquid. If you don't, then maybe you want to consider working on that. A good start would be if you get a tax refund this year.
In today's economy, most financial planners recommend 6-12 months of expenses saved for emergencies since the average time to find new employment is much longer than it was when unemployment was low.

Good luck.

my husband has a federal job and yes, as far as he knows they will have an answer on thursday. He is away at academy right now and he might be home on saturday because of this. He is considered an emergency employee so he will still be getting a paycheck but for anyone else who isn't they will either get no pay or only 40% pay. I really hope it doesn't happen, but he is pretty sure it will

I am not attached to any military info, I can say this//If the gov'ment shuts down why would we not pay the ones defending our country here and over seas? I dont want to get into the politics of it all, I do not think the military or those contracted out by our military should be effected. Let BIG WASHINGTON fight over what it needs to shut down for. i have lost so much faith in our systems of gov'ment. Dont hurt those who are in harms way. or even not and state side. I will be praying for the families. I hope that if there is a shut down it be fast effective and not involve those who have no say in what washington does right now.
