Growth Spurt? - Sacramento,CA

As a first time mom it seems, to me, that I am both confused and concerned by almost everything that my 3.5 month old so does. For about 2 weeks he was sleeping through the night (about 7-8 hours straight). Now, since Wednesday, he has been waking up every 2-3 hours like he did for the first 1.5-2 months. At first, I thought it was a reaction to his 1st round of immunizations, but now I am not so sure. The other symptoms that he was having after his immunizations (fussiness, etc.) went away about 2 days after the immunizations, but this one has continued. Is he possibly going through a growth spurt? What is typical behavior when babies go through growth spurts?

What can I do next?

Hi B.---I'm not really sure what might be going on with your babe, but the biggest thing that struck me with mine is this. It seemed that every time I think I figured out a routine that we and/or the baby was in, they would change. I think little babies just grow and change so fast, that it is almost futile to think that it is actually a 'routine'. So, just make sure that he is warm, dry and fed and this 'new' development is likely to change again.

Good luck and have fun with the changes. D.

Every child is different. I have had one that sleeps a lot or is very fussy. I have seen all 5 of my kids change up their sleep patterns off and on and then they usually go back to the same. He may be getting sick, even the smallest thing will change their routine up. Just keep an eye out for other things just in case he is getting sick. If not, he should go back to sleeping through the night soon. They also can get their days and night confused very easily. Good Luck! =)

I have heard and read that when babies are getting ready to reach a developmental milestone, their sleep can be disrupted. My 6.5 month old son is on the verge of crawling and he was up every hour last night where as he's used to being up 1-3 times a night. I'm exhausted but know, like Diane said below, once you get used to something, it will change and the routine will be off!!

When my daughter wakes up like that it's usually our first sign of an ear infection. She had her first one when she was about 5 months old and would not sleep through the night, sure enough it was an ear infection. The pressure in her ears was worse when she was laying down.

Good luck!

19 weeks is a wonder week. Google "wonder week" and "4 months sleep regression.

Hang in there. I too have a 3.5 month old.
